Alex Cobb To Pitch Through Partial Ligament Tear In Right Elbow

Alex Cobb will continue pitching despite a confirmed partial ligament tear in his right elbow, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

This is a risky move as most pitchers that suffer a torn elbow ligament tend to eventually undergo Tommy John surgery.  The right-hander hasn’t pitched yet this season.

The 27-year-old is coming off a great year a season ago where he posted a 2.87 ERA, 1.136 WHIP and 149/47 K/BB ratio over 166 1/3 innings. Cobb hasn’t pitched in 2015 yet.

Cobb was injured during a Spring Training appearance on March 17 as he hurt his elbow. New manager Kevin Cash knows how important the Rays ace is in staying in the hunt for October. Tampa Bay is off to a surprising 14-12 start as it was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the team.

"We'll have more probably in the next two or three days,” Cash told Tampabay.com. “He just didn't feel as good as he was hoping. Anytime you're dealing with a pitcher's arm it’s obviously concerning."

Cobb received PRP therapy, where platelet rich plasma is injected to speed healing, during a visit to see noted specialist Dr. James Andrews, according to Tampabay.com.

It is unclear when exactly Cobb will make his 2015 debut.
