Three Fringe Waiver Picks for the Coming Weeks

Click here to get fantasy baseball advice on three players to watch out for in the early going. Play your waiver wire well to win your league with RotoBaller!

In this piece, RotoBaller delves deeper into three players who are currently in our Daily Updated Waiver Wire Watch List that you should look to own over the next few weeks. These are fringe players, available on the waiver wire in many leagues, who could have an immediate impact on your team. If you invest a roster spot in one of these guys and catch a hot streak, you could then trade for a more stable player, or roll the dice on continued hot performance. Either way, you could see a fairly nice return from any of these players.

MBrantleyMichael Brantley, OF (CLE) – Brantley won’t blow you away in any one category, but he’s putting together a solid season across the board. Over the last month, the Indians outfielder has hit .281/.327/.494 with 5 HR and 19 RBI while chipping in five steals, and is now on pace to hit .284 with 13 HR, 81 RBI and 16 SB on the season. His ownership is steadily climbing, so grab him now and expect solid-but-unspectacular offensive production.

Jeremy Hefner, SP (NYM) – Believe it or not, Hefner has been the best pitcher on the Mets-- and one of the best in all of baseball-- since the beginning of June. In that timeframe, the righthander has a 1.64 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 37/8 K/BB ratio over 44 IP. Those are elite numbers in all formats, making it asinine that he’s sitting on the waiver wire in 49% of CBS and 81% of Yahoo leagues.  Hefner is 27 years old, a prime age for a young pitcher to finally start putting it all together, so we could well be witnessing a legitimate breakout.

Alfonso Soriano, OF (CHC) – You’d be hard-pressed to find a hotter hitter than Soriano, who has put up a .296/.301/.676 triple-slash over the past three weeks and has slugged 12 HR since the start of May. His 10/77 BB/K ratio is hideous, but we’ve grown accustomed to that over the years; what potential owners should really be focusing on is the fact that despite all the hand-wringing over his contract, Soriano has still averaged 27 HR per season in Chicago and is currently on pace for 24 this year. Add in that he could very well post a 20/20 season, and you’ve got a quality addition available in 33% of CBS and 42% of Yahoo leagues.
