Yoan Moncada Exits Friday's Game With Thumb Injury
4 days agoLos Angeles Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada (thumb) exited Friday's matchup with the Guardians after reaggravating a thumb injury. It is the same problem the 29-year-old dealt with during spring training that kept him out of action for a couple of weeks. It's not clear if the injury will require an IL stint this time around in order to make sure the deep bone bruise heals properly, but fantasy managers who were using Moncada should have a backup plan in place in the event the switch-hitter misses any time. Luis Rengifo (hamstring) also exited the contest with an injury, so it was veteran Kevin Newman who replaced Moncada at third. Unfortunately, missing time has become common during Moncada's career, with 2022 being the last time he played in over 100 games (104). Once considered one of the league's top prospects, injuries have kept him from living up to that billing. Check back later for news as to whether or not an IL stint will be required.

Yoan Moncada Expected To Miss Sunday's Game, Could Return On Tuesday
4 days agoLos Angeles Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada (thumb) is expected to miss Sunday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. According to Angels manager Ron Washington, Moncada isn't likely to return to the lineup until Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old aggravated a thumb injury during Friday's game against the Guardians and was not in the lineup for Saturday's contest. He has been dealing with a thumb injury and missed the last two weeks of spring training. Moncada is considered day-to-day. The Angels are off Monday, and the extra rest day could set Moncada's return to the lineup on Tuesday. Luis Rengifo will shift from second base to the hot corner, and Kyren Paris will pick up a few starts at the keystone with Moncada sidelined.

Yoan Moncada Won't Play On Saturday
4 days agoLos Angeles Angels infielder Yoan Moncada (thumb) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. Moncada will take a seat after aggravating his thumb injury during Friday's contest. Right now, Moncada will only miss one game, but it wouldn't be shocking to see him end up on the injured list. Luis Rengifo will cover third base, while Kyren Paris takes over at second base against right-hander Tanner Bibee on Saturday. It's unclear when Moncada will get back in the lineup, but he's really only an asset in AL-only formats right now.

Yoan Moncada Making Angels Debut On Saturday
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels infielder Yoan Moncada (thumb) is making his season debut for the Angels at third base and is batting fifth on Saturday against his former team, the Chicago White Sox, and right-hander Jonathan Cannon at Rate Field. The Cuban switch-hitter has never faced Cannon in his MLB career. The 29-year-old was held out of the team's Opening Day loss on Thursday in Chicago due to a minor thumb injury that was bothering him at the end of spring training, but after an off day on Thursday, Moncada is feeling good enough to give it a go. He should see most of the starts at third base for the Halos moving forward, but Moncada is mostly just a fantasy option in AL-only leagues and isn't guaranteed consistent playing time if he scuffles early on. Moncada did hit 25 home runs back in 2019, but he's struggled to stay healthy and hasn't played over 100 games in a season since 2022.

Yoan Moncada Not Playing On Opening Day
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada (thumb) is on the team's Opening Day roster but is not in the starting lineup on Thursday versus the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Sean Burke at Rate Field. Instead, Luis Rengifo will start at third base and bat sixth for the Halos. Moncada dealt with a right-thumb injury at the end of training camp and isn't quite ready to make his regular-season debut with the Angels, but he could be back in the lineup on Saturday in Chicago after a scheduled day off on Friday. When the former White Sox third baseman is healthy, he should see regular playing time at the hot corner, with Rengifo shifting over to second base. The 29-year-old Cuban hit just .190 (4-for-21) with a double, home run and two RBI in 10 spring training games, though, after playing in just 12 games in 2024 in Chicago due to injury.
