2 days agoOn Sunday, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that pitching prospect Will Warren made the Opening Day roster and will make his first start on April 1 versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. Warren, getting his first taste of MLB, is a 25-year-old drafted by the Yankees in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB draft. Warren has had a respectable spring training, logging 19 ⅓ innings, a 4.19 ERA, 4.57 FIP, and an 8.84 K/9. The Yankees have been struck with the injury bug, losing their ace Gerrit Cole (elbow) for the year and Luis Gil (lat) for at least the first three months of the season. This opens the door for Warren and allows him to show he belongs in the big leagues. Fantasy managers can stay away from Warren for the time being until he showcases some consistency in his first few starts.--Nicho Roessler - RotoBaller

6 days agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher prospect Will Warren stumbled for the second consecutive spring start, allowing four earned runs on seven hits (including two home runs) and two walks while striking out three in Thursday's 9-7 Grapefruit League win over the Orioles. The good news, however, was that the righty was able to throw 74 pitches, potentially getting him closer to locking down a rotation spot for New York. The Yankees will already be without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil to begin the season, but now Clarke Schmidt looks like he won't be ready either, which would all but guarantee Warren's role. Although the 25-year-old got hit around his last two starts, he looked impressive over his first three and still boasts a 5:19 BB:K over his 19 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. The Yankees' second-ranked pitching prospect would be worthy of a roster spot in deeper leagues given his strong strikeout stuff and potential to rack up wins with that offensive backing. --Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher prospect Will Warren turned in yet another impressive start in Tuesday's 12-3 Grapefruit League win over the Phillies, tossing three innings, allowing one earned run on one hit (a home run) while walking one and striking out four. It was the first earned run he's allowed this preseason over a total of eight innings pitched (1.13 ERA), yielding just two hits and two walks while striking out 11 batters. The righty is doing all the right things to earn a rotation spot this spring, especially with Luis Gil (lat) going down with injury, but right now, it is veteran Marcus Stroman penciled into the fifth rotation spot, not Warren. Stroman, on the other hand, hasn't been very good this spring but obviously has the edge in terms of experience. If the Yankees' second-ranked pitching prospect doesn't win the job this spring, look for the former eighth-round draft pick to be the first one called up when New York needs an arm. If he does win the job, Warren would be rosterable in many leagues, so keep close tabs on this competition.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher prospect Will Warren turned in his second consecutive strong outing to open the spring season, tossing three innings of perfect baseball in Wednesday's 7-0 Grapefruit League win over the Cardinals. The righty didn't allow a hit or a walk while striking out four batters, utilizing a four-pitch mix that included a nasty sweeper and a four-seamer that coaxed three whiffs on its own. The 25-year-old debuted with the Yankees last season, but the results weren't nearly as stellar, however, with a strong spring, he could be one of the first options to be called upon to fill a rotation spot if necessary. Despite a high ERA and WHIP last year at Triple-A, the 6-foot-2 hurler struck out 136 batters in 109 2/3 IP (11.16 K/9). As he's not expected to break camp with the club, the former eighth-rounder is not on the 2025 fantasy draft radar, but is certainly giving redraft managers reason to take notice.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

7 months agoThe New York Yankees recalled right-handed pitching prospect Will Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday and placed right-hander Luis Gil (back) on the 15-day injured list with a lower-back strain in a corresponding move. Even though Warren, the team's No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, has an 8.59 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in his first three major-league starts this year, he's worth a look for rotation depth in deep mixed leagues now that he's back in the majors and likely to take Gil's spot in New York's starting rotation. The 25-year-old former eighth-round pick in 2021 out of Southeastern Louisiana allowed 14 runs on 19 hits (three homers) while walking five and striking out 17 in 14 2/3 innings in his three starts against the Phillies, Angels and White Sox. In the long run, Warren profiles as a back-end starter in the Bronx.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
