Cam Smith Could Make Opening Day Roster
Cam Smith could make the Opening Day roster. The Astros acquired Cam Smith, Isaac Paredes and Hayden Wesneski from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for outfielder Kyle Tucker earlier in the offseason. Through the early part of spring training, the former 14th overall pick has been very productive holding a .636/.733/.1.364 slash line with two home runs, a triple, seven RBI, and a 4:1 BB:K ratio. Even though Smith only has 32 games of MiLB experience as he was drafted from last year's rookie class, the Astros could use additional depth in their infield if Christian Walker (oblique) is not ready for Opening Day. Walker underwent an MRI earlier this week and appears to have avoided a significant injury but could still miss time. However, if Smith begins his 2025 campaign at Triple-A, fantasy managers should continue to monitor his development as he could push for an early-season MLB debut given his strong play at spring training.

Cam Smith Heading To The Bench
Cam Smith is out of the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The rookie slugger will get a breather here after going 0-for-2 during Friday's contest. The Astros are hopeful for big things from Smith, but he has started slowly out of the gate. He's slashing .219/.306/.391 with three homers and 10 RBI in 20 games this season. Zach Dezenzo will take his place in right field and bat seventh versus right-hander Michael Wacha. The assumption is that Smith will be back in the lineup following this contest.

Cam Smith Absent From Astros Lineup
Cam Smith will retreat to the bench for Wednesday's contest against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays at Daikin Park. With Smith getting a breather, Zach Dezenzo will start in right field and bat seventh against Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis. Smith will get a day of rest after starting each of the team's last 13 games. During that span, the 22-year-old prospect went 12-for-44 (.273) at the plate with three home runs, a triple, 10 RBI, a steal, seven runs scored, three walks and 11 strikeouts to rebound after a slow start to his first MLB season. The former 14th overall pick last year by the Chicago Cubs out of Florida State tore it up in spring training but looked overmatched early on during the regular season. He's now hitting .226/.304/.403 and should continue to play regularly in right field for Houston. Dezenzo has never faced Francis in his career.

Cam Smith Hits Two Taters On Friday
Cam Smith had his best day as a big-leaguer on Friday, smacking two homers in a 6-4 win over the San Diego Padres. Smith hit a three-run shot in the second inning to put the Astros ahead, then added a solo homer in the fourth for some insurance. Although he hasn't gotten off to a flying start, Smith has flashed some upside, hitting three homers and swiping a base in just 49 at-bats. Holding onto the rookie while he figures things out at the major league level would be a wise move.

Cam Smith Hits First MLB Home Run
Cam Smith went 2-for-4 with a home run during their victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday evening. Smith would knock an RBI single in the sixth inning. Later in the eighth inning, Smith would launch his first MLB long ball, which also scored outfielder Jake Meyers. In addition to his production at the plate this evening, Smith also swiped a bag. After tallying just two hits over his first six games of the season with a 2:9 BB:K, the top prospect has begun to turn the corner. Smith has tallied at least one hit in each of his past three games and two hits in each of his previous two games. The former 14th overall pick from last year's MLB Draft was able to earn a spot on the MLB roster during spring training. Given his recent surge, fantasy managers should expect him to continue to see opportunities in the starting nine.
