Coby Mayo Struggling In Grapefruit League
28 seconds agoBaltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo has gone 1-for-20 at the plate in the Grapefruit League. Mayo's lone hit did not go for extra bases. The former fourth-round pick is considered one of the top third base prospects in the sport. Last season, Mayo flashed immense power upside in the minor leagues. In 89 games with Triple-A Norfolk, Mayo posted a .289/.364/.562 slash line with 23 doubles and 22 long balls. He held a 40:97 BB:K ratio and added four swiped bags. However, during his brief taste of the majors, Mayo took a significant step back. In 17 contests, Mayo tallied just four hits and held a .098/.190/.098 slash line. He generated a low .170x BA with a 21.2 percent hard-hit rate. If Mayo continues to struggle during camp, he may begin the season at the Triple-A level. When he does return to the majors, he will likely compete for starts as a designated hitter as Jordan Westburg should see most of the opportunities at the hot corner.
