Kevin Newman Viewed As The "Favorite" To Win Starting Shortstop Job
8 hours agoLos Angeles Angels infielder Kevin Newman is viewed as the favorite to win the starting shortstop job with Zach Neto (shoulder) sidelined. Rhett Bollinger noted that since Newman is a lock to make the roster he has the "leg up" on the competition. Tim Anderson and Scott Kingery are viewed as the other options but given Newman's strong defensive play, he has the clear advantage. Last season, Newman posted a .278/.311/.375 slash line with three home runs and eight stolen bases. He struck out at a strong 15.4 percent rate and placed in the 91st percentile in range. Last season in Arizona, Newman made 55 starts at shortstop and 44 starts at the keystone. If Newman continues to perform well in spring training, he could have viable short-term value in AL-only formats if he has an everyday spot in the Los Angeles starting nine.
