2025 Fantasy Baseball Outlooks For Catchers

William Contreras, Milwaukee Brewers

Miwalukee Brewers catcher William Contreras is the top catcher to roster in redraft leagues. The veteran catcher had his best season ever in 2024, hitting .281 with 23 home runs, 92 RBI, 99 runs, and nine stolen bases.

Contreras had a 49.5% hard hit percentage, which was good for the 91st percentile in major league baseball. He pairs a very acceptable strikeout percentage (20.5%) with an excellent walk rate (11.5%), leading to more run-creation opportunities.

Contreras had an xwOBA of .358, hitting out of the No. 2 slot in the batting order. Contreras also has two consecutive seasons with over 600 plate appearances, as on days when he is not catching, Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy uses him in the designated hitter spot to keep his bat in the lineup while resting his body from the rigors of daily catching.

With another 30-40 games in the DH spot, Contreras provides even more value from the catching position, with nobody close to him being the number-one choice behind the plate.

Samuel Basallo, Baltimore Orioles

There's no denying that Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo is one of the top-hitting prospects in all of baseball, but will he be able to make an impact for fantasy leagues in 2025? In 127 games between Double-A and Triple-A, Basallo slashed .278/.341/.449 with 19 home runs and 10 steals, finishing the season with a trio of home runs in 21 Triple-A games.

While Basallo has consistently flexed his plus raw power in the minors which includes a 48% hard-hit rate in Triple-A, Basallo's contact rate dipped to 65% at the level with a 17.7% swinging strike rate. Despite the concerns, Basallo is probably more of a .260-.270 hitter than a .280-.290 hitter long-term while flirting with or exceeding 25 home runs annually.

The long-term upside is a Top-5 player at catcher or Top 10 at first base, but when will he see regular playing time with Baltimore? Given the presence of Ryan Mountcastle at first base, Ryan O'Hearn at DH, and Adley Rutschman at catcher, I'm wondering if Basallo's 2025 season somewhat mirrors Coby Mayo's 2024 in terms of playing time at each level.

Adley Rutschman, Baltimore Orioles

Remember when Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was going to redefine the catcher position for fantasy when he debuted in 2022? He hasn't reached those lofty heights, but there are reasons to be encouraged despite a miserable second half of 2024 that dragged down his overall numbers.

On June 27, Rutschman was hit by a pitch in his hand and missed a game. The injury appears to have sapped his power and ability to drive the ball. Before then, it seemed he'd ascended towards the catcher god status many predicted: .300 average (.830 OPS) with 15 homers and 55 RBI in 348 plate appearances.

After the injury, his line drive rate fell 3%, and his HR/FB went from 13% (above league average) to a feeble 3.7%. The result was quite uncharacteristic, with a .207 average and just three dingers in his final 58 games.

Rutschman is expected to be healthy for spring training, and while it would be irresponsible to project him to double his 2024 first half, he may be ready to build on that start as he enters his age-27 season. That could make him a relative bargain now that he's being picked later in early redraft leagues.

ATC is projecting Rutschman to bounce back some with a .334 wOBA, 20 home runs,  76 runs, and 73 RBI over 613 plate appearances in 2025. Rutschman is currently the third catcher off the boards at his current NFBC ADP of 64.53, making him a value pick if he can replicate or come close to his projections.
