Victor Vodnik: Closing Opportunities For The Rockies In 2025?
8 mins agoColorado Rockies relief pitcher Victor Vodnik was a relatively bright spot in the bullpen last season. Vodnik appeared in 64 games, winning five, saving nine, while posting 65 strikeouts in 73 innings with a 4.28 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. While the strikeout rate is low at 20.3%, and the walk rate high at 11.6%, Vodnik features a 98 MPH fastball that outs him in the 97th percentile for velocity. His 53.9% groundball rate is also intriguing, which plays well in his home field of Coors, where keeping the ball down as a pitcher is imperative. Manager Bud Black announced to reporters last week that the closer role is a competition, and that Vodnik is in the mix for the job. This will bear watching, even as conventional wisdom says never to roster a Colorado Rockies pitcher. Vodnik could have a leg up on rookie Seth Halvorsen based on the fact that Vodnik has some experience last year in the role.
