TGL Match Preview - Jupiter Links vs. New York Golf Club

TourPicks offers a preview of TGL Match 9 between the Jupiter Links and New York Golf Club. Insight and analysis into TGL strategy, holes, betting lines, and picks to win for Match No. 9 of TGL golf.

Yesterday was a win for TGL. A big win. Three highly competitive matches, two that came down to the final hole and one that ended in an overtime chip-off, showcased exactly the type of feel-good golf entertainment that this league intends to provide on weeknights. The benefit it's having for player brands is massive, as it gives the opportunity to display their personality in ways that are unique and endearing to fans.

Speaking of endearing to fans, Tiger Woods returns to the Sofi Center tonight as the lead man for the Jupiter Links as they take on the 0-2 New York Golf Club.

With such a short season, it's a pivotal match for both teams if they have intentions of making the playoffs in one month. Here is everything that you need to know for tonight's 7 PM ET Match on ESPN.

Match 9: 7 PM ET ESPN

Jupiter Links (1-1)

Player 1: Tiger Woods

Player 2: Kevin Kisner

Player 3: Tom Kim

New York Golf Club (0-2)

Player 1: Cam Young

Player 2: Rickie Fowler

Player 3: Matt Fitzpatrick

NEW HAMMER RULES

Great success (Borat voice*). Credit to TGL for making the change mid-season that has completely uplifted the gameplay and strategy. The results we're three electric matches that came down to the wire yesterday.

The Rundown

No surprise here, but Jupiter has chosen to run out the same winning roster they used in an upset win over the Boston Common team a few weeks ago. Tom Kim has been a star, both on the mic and contributing in huge moments. I believe it was savvy of Jupiter to put Kim in the final spot, matching him up with Matt Fitzpatrick, who has struggled in his first two appearances in TGL.

New York does have a distinct advantage in driving distance. They lead the TGL in average distance at 321.7, while the Jupiter team ranks last at 303.5 yards. Before the season began, I pinned distance as the most important skill to have in TGL. That said, after watching all three matches yesterday, it confirmed for me that matches are won or lost on the greens.

New York has been the worst-putting team in the league by far. In fact, Matt Fitzpatrick, Cam Young, and Rickie Fowler have statistically been three of the four worst putters this season, averaging only 3.7 feet on made putts in their first two matches. Jupiter has a big advantage on the greens, with all three players competing tonight inside the top half of the league in putting success.

The course setup for tonight will actually be the exact same setup that they used in Match 7. It will play a total of 5,809 yards, once again as a 15-hole course.

Two of the longest par fours and two of the par fives will have the tee shots hit into play by Tiger Woods and Cam Young, a clear advantage for NYGC, assuming that Young can hit the fairway. The opening hole, Flex, is a 502-yard par four that is played around molten lava with the toughest GIR rate in TGL thus far.

The Betting Line

New York Golf Club -150 vs. Jupiter Links +130 (betonline.ag)

Being in the media center and interviewing these teams weekly, combined with watching them interact off-screen and pre-game, I sense very different levels of camaraderie between these two teams. Maybe that is worth something, maybe that is worth everything.

This Jupiter team likes one another, and they seem to care more than any other team I have seen. They take warmups very seriously, practice together, and lean on one another for strategy.

Plus, they have the GOAT wielding the Hammer. Jupiter has thrown the hammer more than any other team through two matches, and you know that Tiger is chomping at the bit to give the fans what they want tonight. Woods also seems eager to play. You could tell he's ready to compete, given his appearance in the booth at the Genesis Invitational, so you know that this match will receive his full focus.

New York has a clear advantage off the tee, but I am seeing that skill become somewhat de-emphasized through eight matches thus far. They have struggled to hit greens and are statistically the worst-putting team in the league. I like the unquantifiable elements of this Jupiter team much more. The moxy, the strategy, and the clutchness.

My Picks:

Jupiter Links +130

Tom Kim over Matt Fitzpatrick -125

Thanks for reaching and check me out LIVE from the Sofi Center tonight!
