Helio Castroneves Will Use The Open Exemption Provisional To Race At Daytona
5 mins agoFour-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves ran Daytona 500 Duel No. 1 in a third Trackhouse Racing entry, the No. 91 Chevrolet, as he attempted to make the 500 by racing his way into the event. Beginning the race from the 20th position, Castroneves kept up with the pack in the first few laps and didn't make many moves as he tried getting used to his car in race conditions. After the first caution of the Duel race, however, Castroneves started slowly rising through the pack, and on lap 13, he was beginning to crack the Top 10. However, Chandler Smith and Justin Haley lost control of their cars on that same lap, and Castroneves got caught up in their wreck. Helio's car obtained damage to the point where he could not continue and would place 22nd out of 23 drivers. While usually, as an open driver, this would eliminate Castroneves from contention into the Daytona 500, he will still race in the main event thanks to the Open Exemption Provisional and be added as a 41st driver.
