Liam Hendriks 2025 Fantasy Baseball Outlook: Will Battle Chapman To Be Boston's Primary Closer
1 day agoBoston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks (elbow) missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. Before the elbow surgery, Hendriks was one of the best closers in baseball, racking up 75 saves with a 2.66 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 198 strikeouts over 128 2/3 innings pitched from 2021-2022 with the White Sox. The 35-year-old is on track for a normal spring training and is fully healthy heading to the start of the season. He hasn't been healthy over the last few years after battling cancer and undergoing Tommy John surgery. Still, with a clean bill of health entering spring training, Hendriks is on track to compete with Aroldis Chapman to be Boston's primary closer. Chapman signed a one-year, $10.75 million contract with the Red Sox this offseason with a chance to compete for ninth-inning duties. Fantasy managers should monitor Hendriks' velocity closely this spring to see if he can get back to the upper 90s he was throwing before the injuries. ATC projects Hendriks to split closing duties with Chapman this year, projecting 15 saves, 10 holds, and 60 strikeouts over 54 frames in 2025. Ranked 30th among all relief pitchers at RotoBaller, Hendriks is worth a late-round flier at his current NFBC ADP of 280.92 for fantasy managers looking for saves in the later rounds.
