Ryan Pressly 2025 Player Outlook: Set For Closer Role With New Club
1 month agoEarlier this offseason, right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Pressly waived his no-trade clause to join the Chicago Cubs. Pressly rejected several other trades, suggesting the Cubs will likely deploy him as the clear ninth-inning option in 2025. Last summer, the long-time Houston Astros closer was relegated to a setup role as Josh Hader took over ninth-inning duties. Across 56 ⅔ innings of work, Pressly posted a 3.49 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP with four saves and 25 holds. He struck out 58 batters and held a solid 7.4% walk rate. In 2023, he held a similar 3.58 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP across 65 ⅓ innings. However, that season, he generated a much higher 27.6% K rate than the 23.8% K rate he held in 2024. However, he lowered his hard-hit and barrel rates in 2024 compared to his 2023 production, which is a promising sign. While Pressly may not carry a high strikeout upside compared to other closers, he should have a high floor given the ample save opportunities he should see pitching on a competing Cubs team. While his current 519 ADP on the NFBC is sure to rise, given his new role in Chicago, he is a great target if you decide to find your saves later in your drafts.
