There are a number of situations that can affect players' scoring outputs. For example, injuries to the player, injuries to teammates, strength of schedule, and matchup-dependent factors.
All of these need to be considered when making close start-sit decisions. Sometimes, it's obvious that a player should start, but fantasy value is fragile.
Let's break down three popular players in fantasy football this season and whether you should start them.
Should I Start Jauan Jennings for Fantasy Football?
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings had all the makings of a league-winner a few weeks ago. He plays with excellent efficiency, seems to take over his team's WR1 job, has plenty of target volume, and produces well with it. The problem isn't him; it's the quarterback situation.

49ers QB Brock Purdy is dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder. It's more than just soreness. He wasn't able to play in Week 12, and while he logged a limited practice on Wednesday, he wasn't able to throw full-velocity passes. It seems unlikely Purdy will play this week.
Jennings' value takes a hit either way. He's a WR3/flex in deeper leagues with the backup QB, Brandon Allen, throwing the passes.
Should I Start Bucky Irving for Fantasy Football?
Yes. There is no reason to bench him at this point. He out-snapped the team's lead back, Rachaad White, for the first time in Week 12. He also scored 27.2 PPR fantasy points. He's looking like a true league-winner and is the most productive RB from the 2024 NFL Draft class so far. Also, he has no shortage of highlight-reel plays.

His elusiveness is a beautiful sight to behold. He's a master juke artist, and he's in one of the league's great offenses. Start him in all leagues.
Should I Start Khalil Shakir for Fantasy Football?
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir has been his team's best wide receiver this season, even after the team drafted rookie WR Keon Coleman (wrist) and traded for vet Amari Cooper (wrist), though both have been dealing with injuries. Shakir has been an excellent asset in PPR leagues, regularly scoring double-digit PPR fantasy points.

He thrives off his ability to create YAC. With all three of the team's top wideouts healthy, he may see less target volume -- the injury issues have probably caused quarterback Josh Allen to throw to Shakir more. Still, for this week, Shakir should be started in PPR leagues with 12 or more teams.
