Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce (groin) has now missed two consecutive games in Weeks 9-10 after being unable to start in Weeks 2-5 due to other injury issues. It's been a frustrating couple of seasons for the third-year pro, who saw a huge drop-off in production from his freshman to sophomore seasons.
He was viewed as the clear lead back for the team after a breakout 2022 rookie campaign but saw his efficiency and yardage fall massively, leaving fantasy managers wondering what could cause something like this to happen. This season hasn't been much different, though he's barely had any volume to work with.
So when will Pierce return for the Texans? Here is the latest injury update.

Dameon Pierce Injury Update
The former Florida Gator is suffering from a groin injury that's now caused him to miss the team's last two contests. It's unclear if it's related to his previous hamstring injury, but it's concerning to see him miss so much time this season. There could be underlying issues that are facilitating so many serious ailments.

Currently, there isn't a timetable for his return. The team likely doesn't have much motivation to rush him back, but groin injuries typically aren't season-ending issues, so he may come back soon.
Dameon Pierce Fantasy Football Outlook
His lack of fit in the running schemes that offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik runs made him largely fantasy-irrelevant in 2023, and so far this season, it's been more of the same. Former Cincinnati Bengals runner Joe Mixon firmly controls the backfield, and that isn't about to change.
I asked Bobby Slowik about the challenges Dameon Pierce has faced in a new scheme & why it’s been so difficult for him #Texans
“He’s been taking the steps, he’s definitely been pushed along in kind of how we want to read things…” pic.twitter.com/YCsquKlyc9

Slowik absolutely loves Mixon and isn't afraid to give him a workhorse role, even when Pierce is healthy. He's little more than a handcuff option for now. Should the lead back get hurt, Pierce could see a bigger role, but in the absence of that, it's tough to imagine him having any fantasy relevance this year.
