Should I Drop Jordan Mason? Fantasy Football Outlook for Week 9

Jordan Mason - Fantasy Football Waiver Wire, Draft Sleepers, Draft Rankings

An injured backup entering his bye week typically checks all the boxes for a droppable player. That might not be the case with Jordan Mason.

The San Franciso 49ers running back averages the fifth-most rushing yards per game (85.6) and has performed admirably in place of Christian McCaffrey. But the reigning Offensive Player of the Year could return in Week 10 and Mason is dealing with an injury of his own.

Should fantasy managers drop Mason ahead of Week 9? Let's dive in and find out!

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2024:

Should I Drop Jordan Mason in Fantasy Football?

Jordan Mason aggravated a shoulder injury during Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. It was the second time in three weeks that Mason's shoulder sent him to the sidelines. Isaac Guerendo handled lead-back duties in the second half.

San Francisco's bye week comes at the right time for Mason, who can use the extra time to rest his impaired shoulder. Unfortunately for him, the 49ers plan on having Christian McCaffrey back in the lineup when they return to action. Mason will be relegated to backup duty.

But McCaffrey's bilateral Achilles tendinitis has lingered far longer than originally anticipated. What happens if he ramps up work in practice and aggravates his injury? Mason becomes a fantasy asset once again. This week doesn't offer many intriguing waiver-wire running back options. Mason is in the group with other insurance backs. He's proven to be a fantasy football asset when called upon.

Who Should I Pickup in Week 9 Fantasy Football?

Most (if not all) of the running backs to target on the waiver wire this week are backups. Blake Corum, Braelon Allen, Ray Davis, Ty Chandler, and more fit that bill.

Isaac Guerendo is a smart stash if roster space is available. There's a chance that neither McCaffrey nor Mason are cleared to play in Week 10. Guerendo would then be the lead runner on a great offense. Otherwise, it's best to hold Mason.
