Week 5 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups - Free Agent Adds Include Dontayvion Wicks, Tre Tucker, Josh Downs, Wan'Dale Robinson, Xavier Legette

Dontayvion Wicks - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, Waiver Wire Pickups

Week 4 is in the books, and fantasy managers might finally have the first good waiver-wire week of the season. There have been minimal options on the waiver wire, certainly very few that caused much excitement. However, this week, several players will garner plenty of attention from fantasy managers, most of whom are receivers.

If you're looking at a 1-3 or 0-4 record, it's time to be aggressive on the waiver wire and change your lineup. The good news is that this week should provide you with plenty of options to do just that.

Our rosters should never stay stagnant. There's almost always a spot on our roster that we can improve, and this article aims to help you identify who that upgrade can be. If you want to take advantage of our great premium tools, please use promo code "BOOM" to receive a 10% discount.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2024:

Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Parameters

A few rules before we get started. Every league is different. Different roster formats. Different roster sizes. That makes this one of the more challenging articles because every league’s waiver wire can look dramatically different.

Even what host site you use matters. ESPN has rankings that are different from those of Yahoo!, which have rankings that are different from those of CBS or NFL, and all of that impacts which players are drafted or not drafted. This year, we’ll be using ESPN’s roster percentages.

The vast majority of players use ESPN. It’s a simple numbers game. We’ll only identify quarterbacks and tight ends with a roster percentage of less than 55%. For running backs and receivers, that number will drop to 45%. We won’t be diving into defenses and kickers too much, but I’ll identify a few streamers to target at those positions each week with a roster percentage below 60%.

Each position will be arranged based on who you should prioritize first at that position. In an attempt to cater to leagues of all sizes, you will see many players listed at each position, but remember, they're arranged in the order in which you add them. Hopefully, this makes the article relevant to even those playing in deep 12-team leagues or 14-team leagues.

Quarterbacks - Fantasy Football Waiver Wire for Week 5

Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings - 43.6% Rostered

Darnold needs to be on rosters. It's as simple as that. He's currently the QB6 through four weeks, not counting the Sunday Night and Monday Night Football games. He's averaging 19.6 PPG and has scored over 19.9 points in three games this season.

In fact, he's scored at least 19.9 PPG in each of his last three games, but he doesn't have his full arsenal of weapons yet. Jordan Addison has missed a few games, and T.J. Hockenson hasn't been active yet for the 2024 season. He's a must-add.

Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks - 29.1% Rostered

Smith is another quarterback who is a priority. He's QB14 on the season, again, not counting the Sunday Night and Monday Night Football games. He scored over 17.8 points in his first two games before having a disappointing outing in Week 3 against the Dolphins, where he had 11.4 points due to two interceptions.

The Seahawks are one of the most pass-heavy offenses in the NFL. With receivers like D.K. Metcalf, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Tyler Lockett, there will be plenty of good games in Geno's future. This is an up-tempo offense that is relying heavily on Smith's arm. Don't be surprised if he finishes as a top-12 quarterback at the end of the 2024 season.

Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers - 33.9% Rostered

This past week, fantasy managers got to see Fields's upside. He scored 31.9 points, which boosted him to QB7 through the season's first four weeks. He's cemented himself as Pittsburgh's starter, and it seems unlikely they'll return to Russell Wilson soon.

In Weeks 1 and 2, Fields scored 11.9 and 11.4 points, respectively. He scored 18.4 points in Week 3 and seemed to be settling into Pittsburgh's offense and getting more comfortable with his pass-catchers. Remember, he is learning another brand-new offense and playing with a new team.

Throughout training camp, he was treated as the backup quarterback, with Wilson handling most of the starter reps. It makes sense that he started slowly in Weeks 1 and 2. He's picked it up in the past two weeks, and his ability to use his legs gives him a safe floor and a very appealing ceiling, which we saw this past weekend. He has the potential to finish as a QB1 this year.

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions - 47.1% Rostered

Goff has started slow this season. He has thrown an interception in his first three games and has yet to score 15 points in a fantasy game this season. However, he is coming off back-to-back seasons of at least 4,400 passing yards and 29 touchdowns.

Given his weapons of Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, David Montgomery, and Jahmyr Gibbs, it's fair to expect Goff and the entire Detroit offense to pick up the pace sooner rather than later.

Despite some fairly gaudy passing stats over the past two years, he didn't finish as a top-12 quarterback in either season in terms of PPG. Fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting that to occur this year, either. However, if or rather when this Detroit offense starts clicking, he should provide fantasy managers with quality QB2 numbers.

Others to Consider: Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins - 34.4% Rostered, Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns - 27.1% Rostered, Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars - 33.2% Rostered, Daniel Jones, New York Giants - 15.0% Rostered

Based on recent reports, it appears that Tagovailoa intends to return to the football field once his IR stint is complete. He's eligible to come back in Week 7. He's traveled with the team and has met with multiple neurologists. He'll have to go through the concussion protocol, but if or when he returns, he's a quality QB2 to have on your roster. If you have an IR spot and can stash him, he's worth adding.

Watson isn't a terrific passer, but his ability to use his legs gives him value in fantasy football. He scored over 15 points in Weeks 2 and 3 despite not throwing for 200 yards in either contest. Being able to run the football continues to be a cheat code in fantasy football. It provides Watson with a safe floor and a high ceiling when the passing game does click.

Lawrence has been up-and-down and hit-or-miss this season. It's been the story of his whole career. There are moments where you see the generational prospect he was promised to be, but there are maddening bouts of inconsistency. In 2022 and 2023, Lawrence had six weeks or longer periods where he performed as a top-10 quarterback.

He's got a strong group of pass-catchers. I don't know if he'll find his stride, but he's done it for periods in the past two seasons. Jones hasn't been all that good, but Malik Nabers is that good, making Jones look passable. Likes Watson, Jones uses his legs. He scored over 18 points in Weeks 2 and 3, and in good matchups, he can be considered a streamer.

Running Backs - Fantasy Football Waiver Wire for Week 5

Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs - 21.5% Rostered

Hunt out-snapped Samaje Perine and Carson Steele. He also finished with 14 rush attempts. Perine was second in carries with five. After signing with them two weeks ago, this was his first game with the Chiefs. Despite being signed off the street, Hunt seemingly took over the Chiefs' backfield in his first game.

If Andy Reid were comfortable working Hunt in this much in his first game, we shouldn't be surprised to see his role grow in the coming weeks. If you're desperate at running back. Hunt is a priority add this week. He already looks destined to have at least 12 touches a game for the Chiefs and could become their goal-line back.

Braelon Allen, New York Jets - 45.6% Rostered

Allen has at least nine touches in the team's last three games. Over the past three games, Allen is averaging two receptions per game. Breece Hall is still the team's preferred pass-catching, two-minute, and goal-line back, but Allen has worked the early-down snaps into a near 50/50 split.

Allen's touches aren't what we'd call "high-value" because he's not getting nearly the number of targets and goal-line opportunities. However, Allen's utilization gives him some standalone value week to week.

He's one of the best handcuffs in fantasy football, but he's also getting 8-12 touches per game. That'll keep him on the RB4 radar week-to-week. Given how much bigger Allen is than Hall, if Allen could earn some of the goal-line carries, he could have weekly RB3 value. He's worth an add in every league.

Rico Dowdle, Dallas Cowboys - 43.4% Rostered

Dowdle is not very good. He's not an exciting talent like Braelon Allen. When you watch him, you can see his limitations. His stats and advanced stats don't do him many favors, either. However, he has become the Cowboys' No. 1 running back, and in fantasy football, volume is king.

The Cowboys have an above-average offense line and are one of the better offenses in the NFL, giving him plenty of scoring opportunities. Due to his role in the Dallas offense, Dowdle is a flex-worthy starter.

Trey Sermon, Indianapolis Colts - 0.8% Rostered

Jonathan Taylor suffered a high-ankle sprain this past weekend. This injury typically causes running backs to miss a game or two. In worst-case scenarios, IR stints have also occurred. Taylor's sprain doesn't seem like that severity, but it could cause him to miss a week or two. Sermon is the next man up and would be the biggest beneficiary if Taylor were to miss time.

Tyler Allgeier, Atlanta Falcons - 41.7% Rostered

Allgeier falls into a similar situation as Allen. He's getting 7-12 touches per game, enough to give him RB4 value weekly. Unlike some running backs in the "others to consider" section, Allgeier is part of his team's offensive game plan weekly. He has at least seven touches in his last three games and scored seven or more half-PPR points in two of his four games.

That's not something to get super excited about, but it's enough to start him in a pinch or if you're desperate. He's getting enough weekly touches to do that. On top of that, he's one of the best handcuff running backs to Bijan Robinson. If Robinson were to miss time, Allgeier would be a top-15 running back.

Tank Bigsby, Jacksonville Jaguars - 6.4% Rostered

Travis Etienne got banged up this past weekend with a shoulder injury. He returned to the game, but this was the second game this season that Bigsby led Jacksonville in rushing. He's been more productive on the ground than Etienne. He falls into a similar situation as Allen and Allgeier. He's getting 7-12 touches when he's healthy and he's one of the best handcuff running backs in fantasy.

Roschon Johnson, Chicago Bears - 13.4% Rostered

In recent weeks, Johnson's role has been growing after being inactive for the first few weeks of the season. The Chicago offense is still dreadful, and D'Andre Swift controls this backfield. However, Johnson now looks like the team's clear No. 2 running back. Swift's efficiency has been terrible, so the team may eventually wish to give Johnson more touches to see if he can be more effective than Swift has been.

Others to Consider: Trey Benson, Arizona Cardinals - 31.4% Rostered, Ray Davis, Buffalo Bills - 8.7% Rostered, Blake Corum, Los Angeles Rams - 27.8% Rostered, Jaylen Wright, Miami Dolphins - 11.5% Rostered, Ty Chandler, Minnesota Vikings - 43.2% Rostered, Tyrone Tracy Jr., New York Giants - 6.2% Rostered, MarShawn Lloyd, Green Bay Packers - 11.4% Rostered, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kansas City Chiefs - 6.1% Rostered, Emanuel Wilson, Green Bay Packers - 8.9% Rostered, Kendre Miller, New Orleans Saints - 9.8% Rostered

This group of handcuff running backs has little to no weekly value unless the starter ahead of them were to get hurt. Benson and Davis are the premier handcuffs of this group. Corum and Wright are the next tier. Ronnie Rivers could get in the way of Corum completely taking over the backfield and we've now seen Raheem Mostert miss multiple games without a large uptick in snaps or touches for Wright.

Chandler is the clear handcuff to Aaron Jones on a high-powered Minnesota offense. Tracy's role has been growing for the Giants in the past few weeks, but he's still just a handcuff to Devin Singletary. Lloyd is currently on IR, but Emanuel Wilson has played quite a bit in the past two weeks. If Lloyd can get healthy, he could have an 8-10 touch weekly role in Green Bay.

That, of course, assumes he could be the team's No. 2 running back. Wilson has played well and might have earned that role this season, with Lloyd missing a large part of the offseason program and now four straight games. Edwards-Helaire is currently on IR for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's unknown if he'll return after his IR stint, but the team could use him with Isiah Pacheco on IR.

Wide Receivers - Fantasy Football Waiver Wire for Week 5

Xavier Legette, Carolina Panthers - 25.0% Rostered

Adam Thielen is currently on IR and will at least miss the next three games. With Andy Dalton under center, Carolina's offense is competent and functional. He was a full-time player and should be valued as a WR4 until Thielen returns. Due to Thielen's age, Legette may play himself into a full-time role even after Thielen returns.

Dontayvion Wicks, Green Bay Packers - 9.6% Rostered

Christian Watson suffered a high ankle sprain this past weekend. Watson has a history of lower body injuries, and Green Bay is conservative regarding their player's injuries. Fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if Watson misses next week or more than one game.

Doubs has done very little this season. If Watson is out, Wicks will become Love's No. 2 pass-catcher behind Jayden Reed, and that would be enough to put him in the top 30 of receivers for Week 5. With bye weeks approaching, Wicks could give fantasy managers a 1-3 week boost.

Wan'Dale Robinson, New York Giants - 27.1% Rostered

Robinson has scored 8.8 half-PPR points or more in all four games this season. He has six or more receptions in three out of four games. He has eight or more targets in three out of four games. He's gone over 60 yards in back-to-back weeks. Robinson's ceiling isn't very high because his yard per reception average is so low. He's not used downfield and is best in PPR-scoring leagues.

He should be valued as a WR3/4 moving forward. He's best viewed as a high-floor, low-ceiling option and an ideal target for fantasy managers looking for a dependable bench option during bye weeks.

Quentin Johnston, Los Angeles Chargers - 47.4% Rostered

Johnston has scored three touchdowns, which has boosted his fantasy value, but he has recorded five targets in three out of his four games. He is operating as Justin Herbert's No. 1 or No. 2 target-earner. He is averaging 9.5 half-PPR PPG.

Outside of Johnston and rookie Ladd McConkey, Herbert doesn't have very many dependable pass-catchers, and Johnston has firmly established himself as one of them. It's rare to find legitimate starters on the waiver wire, but that's what Johnston is, and he's established himself as one of the better red-zone targets for the Chargers.

Josh Downs, Indianapolis Colts - 8.8% Rostered

Downs had an excellent rookie season and was producing on a similar level to Michael Pittman Jr. before his knee injury last year. In just his second game back this season, Downs finished with eight receptions, nine targets, 82 yards, and one touchdown. He was a third-round rookie last year and is one of the few pass-catchers the Colts have who can make something happen after the catch.

After his rookie season and his performance in just his second game back, Downs is a high-quality waiver-wire addition.

Ja'Lynn Polk, New England Patriots - 15.7% Rostered

Polk's playing time and target volume have increased week by week. This past weekend, Polk led the team in targets. The production hasn't been there yet, but Polk is a high second-rounder in just his rookie season. He's not yet someone fantasy managers can start, but he's a high-upside bench stash. If Drake Maye ever gets the chance to start, Polk could become a second-half winner for fantasy managers.

Romeo Doubs, Green Bay Packers - 25.2% Rostered

Much like Wicks, with Watson on the mend and potentially on the verge of missing next week, Doubs is someone fantasy managers in need of a flex starter should consider adding. Doubs has led the Green Bay receivers in snaps and routes, although the production has not followed.

However, with one less mouth to feed, Doubs' production could see an uptick; Watson and Doubs have been Love's primary targets in the red zone, and with Watson now potentially on the verge of missing games, Doubs has a good chance of finding the end zone in the next week or two.

Tre Tucker, Las Vegas Raiders - 10.1% Rostered

With Davante Adams out, Tucker stepped into a full-time role and performed well. He had a big game last week, and as long as Adams is out, he'll continue to be the Raiders' No. 2 receiver opposite Jakobi Meyers.

There are already rumors that Adams could be traded, so adding Tucker may not just be a one to two-week affair until Adams returns; if Adams is moved, Tucker may have the No. 2 role in Las Vegas's offense for the entire second half of the season.

Others to Consider: Tutu Atwell, Los Angeles Rams - 6.9% Rostered, Jordan Whittington, Los Angeles Rams - 3.8% Rostered, Allen Lazard, New York Jets - 40.2% Rostered, Mike Williams, New York Jets - 44.2% Rostered, Demario Douglas, New England Patriots - 28.7% Rostered, Brandin Cooks, Dallas Cowboys - 29.0% Rostered, Jalen Tolbert, Dallas Cowboys - 7.0% Rostered, Andrei Iosivas, Cincinnati Bengals - 13.4% Rostered

Tight Ends - Fantasy Football Waiver Wire for Week 5

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers - 62.4% Rostered

Freiermuth has been one of the better tight ends this season. He has at least four receptions in every game and scored at least 4.5 half-PPR points in every game. He's currently sitting as the TE7 through Week 4, not including the Sunday Night and Monday Night football games.

He is operating as Justin Fields' No. 2 pass-catcher behind George Pickens, and that target volume gives him and fantasy managers a nice floor. Due to his target volume and consistency, he looks poised to finish as a top-12 tight end this season.

Cole Kmet, Chicago Bears - 63.4% Rostered

We're cheating here. Kmet is technically over our rostered percentage, but there are just so few options at tight end to talk about. Chances are Kmet is not available on your waiver wire, but if he is, he's worth adding. His route share has increased, and it's back to where it was last season.

The team used Kmet and Gerald Everett early in the year, making them both useless for fantasy. This past weekend, Everett ran just four routes to Kmet's 20.  The tight end is a dumpster fire, and Kmet's route share puts him back on the fantasy radar.

Colby Parkinson, Los Angeles Rams - 34.2% Rostered

Parkinson hasn't had a big game, but he has five targets or more in three out of four games this season. That's something few tight ends can say. He hasn't been overly effective with those targets, but Parkinson rarely leaves the field for the Rams. He's running a route on most of the Rams' dropbacks, which gives him plenty of opportunities to earn targets.

This is something so many tight ends are struggling with opportunity. So many teams are utilizing a tight end committee with a different player in 11- and 12-personnel, but the Rams almost always use Parkinson. That's a boost to his fantasy value. His playing time, route share, and decent target volume should make him worthy of a roster spot with bye weeks starting soon.

Tucker Kraft, Green Bay Packers - 4.5% Rostered

Christian Watson injured his ankle this past weekend and has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. That could keep him out for a few weeks, which will put Kraft on the streaming radar at tight end.

Kraft had been in a tough spot because of how many mouths the Packers had to feed, which was made even more difficult with the absence of Jordan Love. With Love back and one of those mouths likely to miss time, Kraft becomes interesting.

Kraft finished this past weekend with seven targets, six receptions, 53 yards, and one touchdown. He became even more involved following the loss of Watson, as evidenced above. It is worth noting that Love attempted 54 passes, a formula unlikely to continue, but the Packers were trailing for the entirety of this game.

Fantasy managers shouldn't expect this kind of team passing volume moving forward, but Kraft is still worth a dart throw at tight end if you're desperate.

Others to Consider: Hunter Henry, New England Patriots - 35.0% Rostered, Taysom Hill, New Orleans Saints - 27.2% Rostered (monitor his injury status), Noah Fant, Seattle Seahawks - 8.3% Rostered, Mike Gesicki, Cincinnati Bengals - 44.2% Rostered, Zach Ertz, Washington Commanders - 54.8% Rostered, Erick All Jr., Cincinnati Bengals - 0.4% Rostered, Noah Gray, Kansas City Chiefs - 0.5% Rostered

Henry is operating as the Patriots' No. 1 tight end. His route share and snap share are strong. There's little target competition at receiver, and when they get in the red zone, he's been a favorite of Jacoby Brissett. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has utilized a high number of tight-end screens.

The passing volume and scoring opportunity are a concern in New England, but his utilization is ideal. Hill is a touchdown-or-bust option at tight end. He'll either run in a score and give you a decent outing for a tight end, or he might goose-egg you.

His performance this past weekend is what makes him appealing. He's one of the few tight ends with a decent chance at finding the end zone more than once. Hill did get hurt in Week 4, so that's something to pay attention to.

Fant is here largely due to his environment. Geno Smith is playing great football, and the Seahawks are passing at a high rate. Gesicki and All have split snaps and routes in Cincinnati. It's a full-blown committee in Cincy right now, limiting each player's fantasy appeal.

All's role seems to be growing, but we're still far from fantasy-relevant players. Gray could be someone to keep an eye on due to the loss of Rashee Rice.
