William Byron's Solid Performance Derailed By A Wreck At Watkins Glen
2 months agoHendrick Motorsports driver William Byron ended the Go Bowling in the Glen at Watkins Glen International in the 34th position, two laps off the lead lap. Starting from the 11th position, Byron began the first stage in favorable standing as he would compete for a top-10 running position. Three laps before the first stage ended, Byron went to pit road, sacrificing stage points and track position to end up 21st. This allowed Byron to leapfrog several racers at the beginning of the second stage. In the second stage, Byron mainly ran inside the Top 5 and gained stage points as he placed fifth by the end of the stage. In the final stage, Byron mostly avoided trouble and competed for a top-10 spot until he decided to pit during a debris caution on lap 81. This mired Byron back into the middle of the pack, and a few laps later, Byron was collected in a crash with Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. Although Byron continued, he had too much damage to compete for a top spot, fell two laps down after repairs, and obtained a new worst-career Cup Series finish at the Glen. As the Cup Series heads to Bristol next, Byron could be one to watch for a strong finish, as he has three top-10 finishes in his last four races at the site.
