7 months agoDetroit Tigers infielder Trey Sweeney put together an excellent performance at the plate during Sunday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The former first-round pick has struggled early in his big league career, but had the bat going on Sunday. Sweeney took A's starter J.T. Ginn deep in the third inning for his third homer of the season. It would just continue from there as Sweeney finished the game 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a stolen base in the win. He's still not worth rostering in most fantasy formats, but maybe this is a sign of good things to come for Sweeney.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

2 months agoDetroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney made "minor" swing adjustments during the offseason. Jason Beck of MLB.com noted that the young infielder focused on timing, especially against fastballs. Sweeney expressed that he struggled against fastballs during his first look at the majors, which was a priority in the offseason. Sweeney made his big league debut with the Detroit Tigers in August and logged 36 appearances. Across this small stint, the former 20th overall pick held a .218/.269/.373 line. He hit four home runs and swiped two bags. When facing breaking pitches, Sweeney generated an impressive .552 xSLG. However, against fastballs, the infielder generated a much lower .364 xSLG. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his development during spring training as he could earn the starting role over veteran Javier Baez (hip). If he does earn the job, he could be worth a late flier in deeper formats.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

8 months agoThe Detroit Tigers are calling up shortstop prospect Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo, according to a source. The former first-round pick has been on a tear of late in the minors and was one of two prospects that the Tigers acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline in late July for right-hander Jack Flaherty. Per MLB Pipeline, the 24-year-old is considered the Tigers' No. 20 prospect. Since joining the Mud Hens, Sweeney has hit .381/.447/.667 with two home runs, nine RBI and four steals in 11 games. In 96 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City with the Dodgers, he hit .255/.334/.427 with 13 homers, 62 RBI and 16 stolen bases. The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder from Eastern Illinois figures to play regularly for the out-of-contention Tigers and could take starts away from the struggling Javier Baez at shortstop down the stretch.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoLast week, the Detroit Tigers traded for shortstop prospect Trey Sweeney. Since then, Sweeney has been outstanding with Triple-A Toledo. In three games, he's gone 7-for-14 with two doubles, two home runs, and six RBI. Overall, the 24-year-old infielder has played 99 games this season, slashing .263/.339/.449 with 24 doubles, three triples, 15 homers, 68 RBI, 16 stolen bases, and 44:120 BB/SO. Detroit's No. 24 prospect (per MLB.com), Sweeney is expected to make his MLB debut in 2025.--Wade Smith - RotoBaller

8 months agoLos Angeles Dodgers infield prospect Trey Sweeney was traded to the Detroit Tigers in the deal that sent right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty to Los Angeles. Sweeney was considered the 22nd-best prospect in the Dodger system and was on the verge of making his major league debut. Through his first 96 games at the Triple-A level this summer, the Eastern Illinois product has held a .254/.334/.427 line with 13 home runs, 22 doubles, three triples, 62 RBI, and 16 stolen bases. The young infielder is on pace to have the best season of his minor league career. Sweeney should get an opportunity in the big leagues during the stretch run of the season to audition for a full-time role next summer and could be worth a look in deeper AL-only formats.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
