3 months agoCarson Hocevar will start Sunday's Cookout Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway from the second position. This is the first time in his Cup career that Hocevar will start on the front row, making it the highest start position of the year for the rookie from Spire Motorsports. In two previous starts at Darlington, Hocevar's best finish was 17th while driving for Legacy Motor Club in 2023, but he also led two laps in the spring race at the site earlier in the year. With 25 races completed so far this season, Hocevar has four top-10 finishes, while he has four straight finishes of 12th or better going into this week's race. In practice, Hocevar ranked ninth in overall lap averages and fifth in 10 consecutive lap averages. Although Hocevar has a high start position, solid practice speeds, and favorable recent results, it's difficult to recommend Hocevar this week outside of tournament lineups. This is due to his almost minuscule upside, and his track history at Darlington points to him losing positions this week.
