William Byron Comes up Short in Late-Race Duel at Michigan
3 months agoWilliam Byron finished second in yesterday's FireKeepers Casino 400. In a race where nobody dominated, Byron set the fastest average speed for the first time this season even though he failed to win. While Byron consistently ran in the top 10, he didn't seem to have potentially race-winning pace until the closing stint of the race, particularly when he passed Tyler Reddick on the first overtime restart to take the lead in regulation before Reddick ultimately passed him in double overtime for the win. This might mark the beginnings of a comeback for Byron who hadn't had an on-track pass for the lead since the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte nine races earlier; he also had his highest driver rating in seven races. However, since there are fewer intermediate races in the playoffs than there used to be, his run might not be very predictive of his playoff potential.
