Angels Designate Willie Calhoun For Assignment
3 months agoThe Los Angeles Angels designated first baseman/designated hitter Willie Calhoun for assignment on Thursday. The Angels took a flier on the former Texas Rangers top prospect, but Calhoun, like many other Angels hitters this year, made a minimal impact at the plate this year, hitting .245/.315/.380 with a below-average .695 OPS, only five home runs, 20 RBI and 26 runs scored in 68 games. The 29-year-old left-handed hitter was serving as the Halos' primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching before getting the boot off the 40-man roster. Moving on from Calhoun will most likely benefit the left-handed-hitting Matt Thaiss and potentially Kevin Pillar, who could pick up more DH at-bats. If Calhoun clears waivers, which is likely, he could stick in the Angels' organization and take a demotion to the minors.
