Running back Jahmyr Gibbs ensured that the 12th overall selection used by the Detroit Lions last year was a good bet. The former Alabama standout finished his rookie season with 182 carries for 945 yards and ten touchdowns. He also added 52 catches for 316 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Amazingly, he accumulated those numbers despite starting only three games. He shared the backfield with David Montgomery, who was equally remarkable for the squad that reached their first NFC Championship Game since 1991.
The Lions hope that Gibbs can build on his fantastic rookie campaign and complete a breakout 2024 season. However, his latest hamstring injury could derail a promising year for the 2023 Pro Bowler.
When Will Jahmyr Gibbs Return?
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted that Gibbs left one of their recent practices due to a hamstring injury. This is concerning because he dealt with that condition last year. The two games he missed in 2023 (Weeks 5 and 6) were also due to his ailing hamstring.
Worst yet, the recurring nature of Gibbs’ hamstring condition had ESPN NFL insider Scott Erickson tweeting that the second-year player might have suffered an ACL injury because hamstring issues might be connected with ACL tears.
Update: It’s feared #Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs has suffered an ACL injury. The young star has had a lingering hamstring issue, which correlates with ACL tears.

However, Erickson’s post is purely speculation because the severity of Gibbs’ injury remains unknown. Therefore, his return remains uncertain until the Lions’ medical staff correctly assesses his injury. The Lions and their fans hope the injury won’t need any surgery, increasing his chances of returning before their season opener.
Jahmyr Gibbs Fantasy Outlook
Unless he misses some games due to injury, there’s no reason to skip on Gibbs in the first round of your fantasy football draft, though it's more risky for now. His versatility as a runner and a pass-catcher allows him to deliver massive points weekly.
Many view him as the fifth-best fantasy running back option behind Christian McCaffrey, Breece Hall, Bijan Robinson, and Jonathan Taylor. That position puts him in the top tier of his position, making Gibbs a can’t-miss option for your roster.
