This is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for hitters as of August 7, 2024. Some players on this list impact fantasy baseball more than others, but with leagues of all shapes and sizes, you never know which guys will be important in lineups.

Julio Rodriguez Injury Update

Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez (ankle) took on-field batting practice ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the visiting Detroit Tigers. For the second time on Seattle's nine-game homestand and following Monday's off-day, Rodriguez was on the field taking swings during pregame activities.

The club still doesn't have a definitive timetable on when he might be activated from the 10-day injured list, where he's resided since July 23, and there is also a possibility that Rodriguez will need a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the Mariners. Being able to run without any issues will be a more important checkpoint for the 23-year-old superstar center fielder, who is recovering from a high right ankle sprain. In the meantime, Victor Robles is slashing .297/.378/.432 with three home runs, six doubles, eight RBI, and 14 stolen bases in 111 at-bats in Seattle and is worth a look for fantasy managers in deep leagues.

Kyle Tucker Injury Update

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said that outfielder Kyle Tucker (shin) is doing "limited baseball activity" and is "coming along really well." Tucker has been out since early June after fouling a pitch off his shin and was moved to the 60-day injured list last Tuesday. It's been extremely frustrating for fantasy managers because of the fact that the Astros all along have said the 27-year-old All-Star is merely dealing with a contusion to his right leg.

Houston is optimistic that Tucker will return to the team before September, but there's no specific timeline for his return outside of that. All fantasy managers can do is continue to stash him and hope he can pick up where he left off in the first half of the season. Tucker is one of the best overall fantasy assets when healthy and was hitting .266/.395/.584 with a .979 OPS, 19 homers, 40 RBI, and 10 steals at the time of his injury.

Mookie Betts Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he sees infielder Mookie Betts (hand) playing shortstop when he returns from his hand/wrist injury, which could take place as early as next Monday. Betts will also hit second in the batting order (with Shohei Ohtani sticking in the leadoff spot) to break up left-handed hitters at the top of the order in Ohtani and first baseman Freddie Freeman.

The Dodgers were initially saying that the 31-year-old would be moved to second base, with veteran Miguel Rojas (forearm) staying at the 6, but it appears that plans have changed for now. Regardless of where Betts is playing on the diamond, he's a must-start in all fantasy formats when he returns to the Blue, and the drop one spot down in the batting order isn't going to have long-reaching fantasy effects.

Luis Rengifo Injury Update

Los Angeles Angels infielder Luis Rengifo (wrist) is set to miss the rest of the regular season after undergoing wrist surgery on Tuesday. This is a shame considering Rengifo was in the middle of a breakout campaign. He was batting .300 with six home runs and a career-high 24 stolen bases in 78 games.

However, it's a lost season for the Halos and Rengifo continued to be bothered by a lingering wrist issue. It's best for him to get the issue resolved and come out stronger next season. Fellow infielder Anthony Rendon (back) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. He figures to see increased playing time with Rengifo out of the picture.

Starling Marte Injury Update

New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (knee) is officially set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Wednesday for Single-A St. Lucie, which will mark his first game action since June 22. It's a major step forward for Marte, who recently said he expects to advance to Double-A Binghamton by the end of this week.

Barring any setbacks, that would put him on track to rejoin the Mets during their nine-game homestand beginning next Tuesday against the visiting Oakland Athletics. Fantasy managers should grab the 35-year-old former All-Star from waiver wires where they can at this stage of his recovery from a bone bruise. Before getting hurt, Marte was chipping into each category while batting .278 (68-for-245) with seven home runs, 30 RBI, 38 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases in 66 games as New York's primary right fielder. Despite Jesse Winker's presence, Marte should return to a prominent role for the Mets upon his return.

Gabriel Moreno Injury Update

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (groin) is headed to the injured list on Tuesday with a groin injury and will likely start on the 10-day IL, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Moreno suffered a left groin strain in Monday's extra-inning victory over the hosting Cleveland Guardians, and it sounds as though he's a candidate to miss well beyond the 10 days on the IL.

Fantasy managers should plan accordingly. The D-backs have called up catching prospect Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, and he's expected to split the catching duties in Arizona with Jose Herrera while Moreno is out. The 24-year-old Moreno heads to the shelf, slashing .262/.344/.385 with only five home runs and 41 RBI in 86 games in his second full season in the big leagues. There's a good chance we won't see him again in the big leagues until the final month of the regular season.

Kerry Carpenter Injury Update

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (back) began his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. He started at designated hitter for the Mud Hens and batted second in the order on Tuesday. Recovering on the 60-day injured list since May 29, Carpenter is in the final stages of working his way back from a lumbar spine stress fracture and should be back with the Tigers at some point in early to mid-August.

The 26-year-old left-handed-hitting slugger is slashing a robust .283/.342/.572 with eight home runs, 10 doubles, four triples, and 29 RBI across 163 plate appearances (50 games) as Detroit's primary right fielder this year. With strong four-category upside, he remains worth stashing in most fantasy leagues.
