As the days continue to tick off the calendar in August, we are approaching prime fantasy football draft season. We’ve already seen some injuries to noteworthy fantasy players, which can muddy the waters a bit.
Everyone is looking for those sexy sleepers who can help be league winners. However, sometimes the players that you avoid drafting are just as important as the players that you draft.
Let’s dive into the quarterback position and highlight three players that it might be best to avoid. All ADP data is from Yahoo.

Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins
Yahoo ADP: 100, Overall: QB 12
Playing with Tyreek Hill is fun. Tagovailoa set a new career high with 29 touchdown passes last season, 13 of which went to Hill. He also blew by his previous high for passing yards by finishing with 4,624. If there was a downside, it’s that he also threw 14 interceptions.

Tagovailoa is a good best-ball quarterback because, with Hill at his side, he can go off during any given week. However, he wasn’t exactly a consistent option in redraft leagues. He had nine games in which he threw one or no touchdown passes. He also had eight games in which he threw for fewer than 250 yards.
Another plus for Tagovailoa last season is that he didn’t miss a single game. Injuries had been a problem for him, given that he played in 26 games total over the previous two seasons. There is too much volatility that comes with drafting Tagovailoa to feel comfortable about starting him in anything outside of 15-team of deeper leagues.
Jared Goff, Detroit Lions
Yahoo ADP: 104, Overall: QB 13
Goff threw 30 touchdown passes last season, marking the second time in his career that he finished a season with at least that many scores through the air. He also threw for 4,575 yards, marking his highest total since 2019. His first season with the Lions was a bit of a disappointment, but he has thrown for at least 4,438 yards and 29 touchdown passes in both of the last two seasons.

It’s not all good news with Goff. He was picked off 12 times last year, marking his fourth season with at least 12 interceptions. He also provides very little production with his legs. His career-high for rushing yards in a season is 108, which came back in 2018. In the last two seasons, Goff has combined for 94 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
For those who want to wait at quarterback, it might make sense to keep waiting and pass up Goff at his current ADP. Caleb Williams (ADP 116, QB 15) has plenty of weapons around him and can do damage on the ground. Even Justin Herbert (ADP 121, QB 17) can be had at a discount right now because of his plantar fascia injury. However, he might not any regular season games.
Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers
Yahoo ADP: 121, Overall QB 16
This one comes with a disclaimer. Wilson is not being drafted in all Yahoo leagues, but in the leagues in which he was drafted, this is his ADP. His FFPC (Fantasy Football Players Championship) ADP is 268, which makes him QB 30.
Wilson bombed with the Broncos last year, throwing for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was benched at the end of the season and eventually released. He now finds himself a member of the Steelers, who have struggled to solve their quarterback position in recent seasons.
Wilson turns 36 years old in November and has seen his career on a steady decline. Not only did the Steelers add him into the fold, but they also acquired Justin Fields from the Bears. Fields couldn’t live up to the hype in Chicago, but he is a force in the running game and has significantly more upside than Wilson does.
There’s a chance that Fields is named the starter for as early as Week 1, let alone at some point during the season. Wilson shouldn’t be drafted in any leagues outside of maybe superflex formats or the deepest of leagues. When he is drafted, it certainly shouldn’t be as the QB 16, like we’ve seen in some Yahoo leagues.
