Martin Perez Traded To The Padres
4 months agoEarlier on Tuesday, the San Diego Padres acquired veteran left-hander Martin Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to a source. It's unclear what the Padres sent the Pirates in return for Perez. The 33-year-old southpaw should immediately jump into San Diego's starting rotation as they wait to get both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Yu Darvish (elbow, personal) back. Perez will have a better offense backing him in San Diego, but it's probably not going to make up for deficiencies on the mound. The soft-tossing Venezuelan hurler went 2-5 for the Pirates in 16 starts this year, sporting a 5.20 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with only 63 strikeouts in 83 innings pitched. And in five starts since coming off the injured list on in late June, he's allowed 18 earned runs with 13 walks and 17 K's in 25 2/3 innings. At best, Perez is a matchup-based streaming option in NL-only leagues.
