Tigers Acquire Thayron Liranzo In Deal With Dodgers
4 months agoThe Detroit Tigers acquired catcher/first baseman Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney from the Los Angeles Dodger on Tuesday in the deal that sent right-hander Jack Flaherty to LA, according to sources familiar with the deal. It's considered an underwhelming return for the Tigers relative to other deals for starting pitchers at this year's trade deadline, although Liranzo was the Dodgers' No. 8 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. The 21-year-old signed for $30,000 out of the Dominican in 2021 and was hitting .220 with seven homers, 49 walks and 82 strikeouts in 74 games for High-A Great Lakes. The switch-hitter has plenty of upside due to his raw power, mainly from the left side. He also possesses a strong arm behind the plate but needs work on his blocking. At best, Liranzo could be an option for his big-league debut in Detroit in 2026.
