Blue Jays Acquire Jake Bloss From Astros
Jake Bloss from the Houston Astros on Monday as part of the deal that sent left-hander Yusei Kikuchi to the Astros, according to sources. Bloss was scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and now we know why. The 23-year-old was Houston's No. 9 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and he could immediately join Toronto's rotation to close out the second half of his rookie campaign. The former third-rounder's fantasy stock is down after looking a bit overmatched so far in his first three big-league starts, as he's posted a 6.94 ERA and 1.63 WHIP with 11 strikeouts and three walks in 11 2/3 innings. Bloss doesn't have an overpowering arsenal and relies mostly on command, so fantasy managers can continue to ignore him for now in mixed leagues, especially with the move to hitter-friendly Rogers Centre.

Jake Bloss Optioned To Triple-A On Thursday
Jake Bloss to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday. Bloss' name had been mentioned as a possible candidate to fill the fifth rotation spot in the event that Max Scherzer (thumb) would not be ready for Opening Day, but it looks like Yariel Rodriguez would have the inside track for the job at this point, if needed at all. Scherzer's bullpen session went well on Thursday, so perhaps this move is an indication that they expect the veteran to be ready. Either way, Bloss will need to bide his time in Triple-A until the Jays need another arm. Left-handed pitcher Josh Walker was also optioned to Buffalo.

Jake Bloss A Candidate For Blue Jays' Fifth Starter Role
Jake Bloss may be an option to fill the fifth rotation spot that could be made available by the absence of veteran Max Scherzer (thumb) if his thumb issue lingers or turns out to be worse than initially thought. Bloss has made four appearances this spring, albeit without stellar results. The former third-rounder's latest appearance was his best yet, tossing three innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five batters. The Jays' sixth-ranked prospect had success in the Astros' organization, pitching to a 1.91 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and a 16.3 percent K-BB% over 19 starts (84 2/3 IP), but hasn't fared so well in his three starts in the majors or with Jays' Triple-A affiliate (6.91 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, 7.6 percent K-BB%). The 6-foot-3 hurler would be under consideration for the role of fifth starter along with Yariel Rodriguez who made 21 starts for Toronto last season but who also hasn't shown well this spring.

Blue Jays Could Call Up Jake Bloss In September
Jake Bloss when rosters expand in September and employ a six-man starting rotation for the final month of the season. Bloss, who was acquired from the Houston Astros in the Yusei Kikuchi deal at the end of July, has made three starts for Triple-A Buffalo and has thrown 9 2/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and five walks. Toronto hasn't been in a rush to call him up with rosters expanding, but they also would like to give their regular starts normal rest with a playoff spot not up for grabs. Per MLB Pipeline, the 23-year-old Bloss is Toronto's No. 3 prospect. Other candidates for a promotion when rosters expand this weekend include outfielders Jonatan Clase, Nathan Lukes and Alan Roden. Bloss began the year at High-A Asheville in the Astros' system. He could be in line for a regular rotation role in 2025 in Toronto.

Jake Bloss Scratched, Tayler Scott Making The Start For Houston
Jake Bloss has been scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates due to undisclosed reasons, according to a source. Instead, right-hander Tayler Scott will get the nod against the Bucs. Bloss, the club's No. 9 prospect per MLB Pipeline, came off the injured list on July 11 with right-shoulder inflammation, so it's possible he's had a setback with his arm. The 23-year-old also gave up five runs on six hits (four homers) in his last start against the Oakland Athletics on July 23, so he wasn't going to be a very popular streaming candidate for fantasy managers against Pittsburgh. Scott, 32, will be making his first start of the year and just the fifth of his career after debuting way back in 2019. He's been great in 49 2/3 relief innings for Houston this year with a 1.45 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 50 K's and 23 walks, but he's only going to go an inning or two in what will be a bullpen game for Houston.
