We've seen a wealth of high-end prospects earn their respective calls to the big leagues this season while making fantasy impacts for managers who either drafted them this spring or snatched them off the waiver wire at some point in the 2024 campaign.
When it comes to the Washington Nationals, we have already seen them promote their top prospect and the No. 2 ranked prospect in all of baseball -- according to MLB Pipeline, in outfielder James Wood. However, the Nats also have another top-five-ranked prospect waiting in the wings in the form of the fourth-ranked Dylan Crews, another young outfielder.
After beginning the season at Double-A Harrisburg, Crews is currently at the Triple-A level with the Rochester Red Wings. Let's dive in and see if and when Crews should get the call to the big club and what his potential fantasy impact could be in the 2024 season.
Dylan Crews Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
After scuffling at Double-A to conclude his 2023 season, Crews slashed .274/.343/.446 with five homers, 15 stolen bases, and a .356 wOBA across 51 games with Harrisburg this season, good for a 124 wRC+ that indicates production 24% above the Double-A league average. That impressive piece of work earned him a call to Rochester, where he has taken a step back at the plate, slashing .246/.326/.421 with four homers, five steals, and a .334 wOBA, good for a 92 wRC+ across 29 contests.
While his production at the minors' highest level hasn't lit the world on fire, we should see Crews in the big leagues in 2024. That notion gained significant steam on Monday night when the Nationals dealt outfielder Lane Thomas to the Cleveland Guardians ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. A thin outfield in D.C. just got thinner, likely opening the door for Crews to get his call to The Show.

Nationals fans were excited to (briefly) see Crews and Wood roam the same outfield in Rochester, but they should get the opportunity to see both top prospects together in the Nationals outfield sooner rather than later.
Dylan Crews Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
At just 22 years of age, Crews hasn't displayed light-tower power to this point in his young professional career. He has just one homer over his last 13 contests at Triple-A, although he does have eight doubles and a triple to go along with his four round-trippers with Rochester. His .175 isolated power at Triple-A is solid, if unspectacular.
If Crews does indeed get promoted to the big leagues this season, his value will likely be derived from his speed. He has swiped 20 bases in 80 minor-league contests this season while being caught four times, good for a quality 83.3% success rate.

His dynasty league value speaks for itself, but barring an unforeseen home run surge, Crews' value to 2024 fantasy managers runs through his legs and what he can do on the basepaths with his premium speed.
