FPL Team Previews: Newcastle
After a dream season in 2022-2023 in which almost everything went right for the Toon Army, last year began with adversity, and the hits just kept on coming. After a massive 5-1 win against Aston Villa to start the season, Newcastle lost three straight and began facing key injuries and suspensions in bunches. While they put together a few nice stretches throughout the year, the Magpies never quite got back on track, and they fought hard to narrowly miss out on a top-six position under Howe.

Last Season's Newcastle Stats
- League Finish: Seventh, 60 points
- Most goals: Alexander Isak, 21 goals
- Most assists: Anthony Gordon, 10 assists
- Most FPL Points: Alexander Isak, 172 points
Who is your favorite Newcastle defender for the upcoming FPL campaign?
- Fabian Schar (£5.5M) will be the main pillar for the middle of the Newcastle defense to start the season. Sven Botman (£4.5M) will miss the first half of the season, and we may see a rotation of Dan Burn (£4.5M) and Lloyd Kelly (£4.5M) at the other center-back position. The 32-year-old always could let a strike go from distance, but towards the end of last year, he started pressing forward a bit more, leading to a four-goal season for the first time since 2019. Schar can also send some beautiful balls past back lines to put dangerous attackers like Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Harvey Barnes in on goal.
Which Newcastle midfielder is catching your eye?
- Anthony Gordon (£7.5M) is almost sure to start most fixtures on one of the two attacking wings, and he proved towards the end of last season that he's more than capable of producing offense from those positions. The former Everton man has found success in Howe's high-pressing squad, and he has the combined abilities to dribble past defenders, send fantastic balls in to Isak, and make runs through the box to steal a few goals of his own. The 23-year-old is poised for the best year of his young career if he can stay healthy, and Newcastle has not made the signings to make us question his playing time as of yet.
Shola Ameobi on a #NUFC digital Q&A session this afternoon: 🎤
“Alex (Isak) is a world class striker. But for me, this season, Anthony Gordon has been the standout player. Unfortunately, when he joined the club, he had a bad reputation - but we all saw straight away how good of… pic.twitter.com/2ID5ocsoWN

The Newcastle forward who will be bagging us some FPL points is...?
- Alexander Isak (£8.5M) has a chance to lead the Premier League in goals scored again this year. The two questions we have to ask are: Will he stay healthy? And what will Callum Wilson's (£7.0M) role be? The ability for the 24-year-old Isak is unquestioned now. If they stay fit, Newcastle has all the pieces needed to build a strong attack around the Swede, and we've even seen Isak and Wilson play together at times when the Magpies need fireworks late. Barring an injury, this price tag should only rise as the Newcastle striker finds the back of the net time and time again.
What run of fixtures favors Newcastle the most for the 2024/25 FPL season?
- Newcastle has an EXCELLENT first five fixtures this year. One could argue that a home match against Spurs could spell trouble, but we've seen those two squads get into some crazy shoot-outs the past two years, so I'm not worried in the slightest, especially considering how great the other four Gameweeks should be. Don't hesitate at all to load up your favorite Magpies early, understanding that some decisions may be coming after the first month comes to a close.
Gordon + Isak for £16m 👀 #FPL
Given some of the price increases… Newcastle with this opening run of fixtures, Gordon PLUS Isak could be solid! pic.twitter.com/geEvo6hQcr

How many Newcastle players will you have in your Gameweek 1 squad?
- It's difficult to picture a world in which Isak and Gordon don't make it into my squad in Gameweek 1. Whether or not a defender like Schar makes it a trio remains to be seen. I could also see some value in Tino Livramento (£4.5M) or Lewis Hall (£4.5M) depending on how things shake out with Kieran Trippier (£6.0M) and what we learn from Howe's intentions over the next two weeks.
What is one bold FPL prediction for any Newcastle player?
- I've already hinted at it, so why not go all in? I'll officially predict that Alexander Isak will win the Golden Boot this year, scoring more goals than any other player in the EPL. I'd love to add in a bold prediction about Anthony Gordon's goals plus assists, but I'm hopeful we get more production from the likes of Bruno G (£6.5M) and Harvey Barnes (£6.5M) this year too, so I'll keep it simple with number 14 in black and white.
