Mark Canha Back For The Tigers
9 months agoDetroit Tigers outfielder Mark Canha (wrist) is back in the team's starting lineup on Friday against the hosting Toronto Blue Jays for the start of the second half of the season, serving as the designated hitter and batting fifth against Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt. Canha missed the final game of the first half of the season on Sunday due to a right-wrist injury but healed up nicely over this week's All-Star break. The 35-year-old veteran right-handed hitter will return to a .228/334/.341 slash line with a below-average .676 OPS, six home runs, 34 RBI, four steals and 36 runs scored in 290 at-bats in his first year in Detroit. Canha has gone 5-for-22 (.227) with two doubles and two RBI in seven games in the month of July and hasn't homered since May 11.

Mark Canha Expected To Be A First Baseman, Designated Hitter
1 month agoMilwaukee Brewers first baseman/outfielder Mark Canha is expected to see most of his time as a first baseman and a designated hitter. Canha signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers last week and was invited to spring training. Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted that Canha could also be deployed off the bench as a pinch-hitter. The 36-year-old has spent most of his 10-year MLB career in the outfield but is slated to shift to the infield in Milwaukee. Last season, Canha spent time with the Tigers and Giants and held a .242/.344/.346 line with 20 doubles and seven home runs. If Canha performs well in the camp, he could earn a role operating as the No. 2 first baseman behind Rhys Hoskins or as a designated hitter in a platoon role.

Mark Canha Joins Brewers On Minor-League Deal
1 month agoFree-agent veteran outfielder Mark Canha signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training on Saturday with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman. Canha will join an already crowded outfield group in Milwaukee after splitting the 2024 season with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. In a combined 125 games played, Canha slashed .242/.344/.346 with a below-average .690 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, seven stolen bases and 46 runs scored in 462 plate appearances. The 36-year-old was also traded to the St. Louis Cardinals but sprained his right thumb late in the year and didn't play at all for them. At best, Canha will probably be on the weak side of a platoon in Milwaukee if he manages to make the big-league roster. Canha's plate discipline has always been his strong suit, but as a long shot for an everyday role, he'll have limited fantasy upside, if any at all.

Mets Offer Mark Canha Non-Guaranteed Contract
2 months agoAccording to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the New York Mets have offered outfielder Mark Canha a non-guaranteed contract. Canha spent time with the Mets during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and the team is interested in a reunion. Last season, the 35-year-old spent the 2024 campaign with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. Across 125 contests, Canha posted a .242/.344/.346 line with 20 doubles, seven home runs, and seven stolen bases. Under the hood, he generated a poor .212 xBA and a .306 xSLG, suggesting he will likely face some regression this season. Canha performed well against southpaws, posting a .275 AVG compared to the .229 AVG against right-handers. If Canha were to sign with New York, he would likely be in a platoon role.

6 months agoSan Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Matos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento for the final game of the regular season as outfielder Mark Canha (finger) was placed on the injured list with a right thumb sprain. Matos is not penciled into the starting nine and will be available off the bench as the Giants face the St. Louis Cardinals in their season finale. Matos has posted a .216/.240/.351 line across 44 games at the major league level this summer. The Giant offense is best to fade in DFS this afternoon as they will face Cardinal prospect Michael McGreevy who enters Sunday with a strong 2.40 ERA.
