Marlins Select PJ Morlando At Pick 16
4 months agoWith the 16th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Miami Marlins picked high school outfielder PJ Morelando out of Summerville, South Carolina. Morlando is arguably the biggest reach thus far in the draft as MLB Pipeline had him as the 43rd overall prospect. Morelando recently won the South Carolina Gatorade prep player of the year and has a commitment to the University of South Carolina, but the Marlins are unlucky to have selected him without some type of verbal agreement. Morelando has performed well against top tier competition and won the High School Home Run Derby and MVP award at the High School All-American Game at the All-Star Game last July. He also has made his mark at the U.S. 18 and under team the past two seasons. Morelando has shown a good ability to make contact, but his power has been questioned by scouts and he will need to improve that during his time in the minor leagues, One of the most athletic players in the draft, the Marlins may have found themselves a gem, if they can tap into his power.
