9 months agoLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder Miguel Vargas went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk in Friday's 8-5 win over the Brewers. Vargas has not seen a lot of playing time with the big league club since he was called up for the second time this season, although that could change with Jason Heyward hitting the IL. Then again, James Outman was just recalled as well, so Vargas may still be limited to a platoon situation. If he can get regular at-bats, the 24-year-old does offer some pop as he hit eight home runs at Triple-A this season in just 41 games, and hit 18 last season between Triple-A and the majors. He also stole eight bags at Triple-A this year, so he's got some speed too. The right-handed hitter is eligible at both 2B and OF in Yahoo leagues for managers interested in taking a flier on the youngster.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

7 months agoChicago White Sox interim manager Grady Sizemore said he doesn't have a set plan for third baseman Yoan Moncada, who returned from a lengthy stint on the injured list on Monday. Sizemore said the team is going to prioritize seeing infielders Bryan Ramos and Miguel Vargas at the tail end of the 2024 season. Moncada has been out since straining his groin in early April, so it makes sense for the White Sox to ease him back in while giving more run to Ramos and Vargas late in the year. In Monday's game in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels, Vargas got the start at the hot corner, with Ramos serving as the designated hitter. Ramos, 22, has hit just over the Mendoza Line with two homers, five RBI and 14 K's in his first 22 big-league games in 2024. Vargas, 24, has had a rough year at the plate this year and is hitting just .112 (11-for-98) with a homer and five RBI in 31 games since being acquired from the Dodgers.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 months agoChicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas (eye) is returning to the starting nine on Saturday afternoon and will bat in the eight-hole. Vargas has been kept out of the lineup for the past two games with an eye abrasion that was caused by a collision on September 3. In his past eight games, the 24-year-old has held a .200/.333/.300 line with just four total hits. Fantasy managers should expect Vargas to continue to serve as the everyday second baseman for the remainder of the regular season on the Southside. Vargas does have a favorable matchup this afternoon against Boston right-hander Cooper Criswell who carries a 4.14 ERA but is best to leave off your DFS lineup.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

8 months agoChicago White Sox infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas is out of the team's starting lineup on Wednesday for the series finale at Oracle Park against the San Francisco Giants. With Vargas on the bench, Lenyn Sosa will start at third base and will bat seventh against Giants right-hander Logan Webb. Vargas, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the deadline in late July in the trade that sent right-hander Jack Flaherty to LA, could find himself on the bench more often if he continues to slump at the plate. The 24-year-old Cuban has gone just 5-for-54 (.093) with a homer, double, three RBI and 17 strikeouts in 16 games with a bigger role in his move to Chicago. Overall this year, he's hit just .176/.271/.312 with four home runs, 12 RBI and 14 runs scored in 125 at-bats. Vargas is losing his fantasy appeal in AL-only leagues quickly.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

9 months agoThe Chicago White Sox acquired infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas as part of a three-team trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals. Vargas has struggled in his major league career so far, hitting a combined .201 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI over the past three years. This season, the 24-year-old is batting .239 with three HRs and nine RBI across 30 games. While the results haven't been there for Vargas, the White Sox will take a chance on a former top-40 MLB prospect. Despite likely getting everyday playing time in Chicago, he should only be considered in extremely deep fantasy formats. UPDATE: The White Sox acquired second base prospect Jeral Peraz and third baseman Alex Albertus from the Dodgers as part of the three-team trade.--Joey Pollizze - RotoBaller
