Points League Waiver Wire - Best Choices
Bryan Woo, Seattle Mariners
Yahoo: 82%; ESPN 53%
It's especially surprising to see that Woo is rostered in only half of ESPN leagues. It's even a surprise that he's available in 18% of Yahoo leagues. After spending the first month of this season on the injured list, he's practically unhittable over the last month. Through 33 2/3 innings, he's got a 1.07 ERA, 0.54 WHIP, and a 24:2 K/BB ratio. He's completed exactly six innings in each of his last four outings; three of which were scoreless.
Regression is inevitable for Woo, but his underlying numbers point to continued success. He ranks in the top 5% of the league in xERA (1.80), xBA (.188), walk rate (1.7%), and barrel rate (2.2%). Though he's lagging behind in strikeout rate (20.2%), his propensity for weak contact allows him to throw deep into games. Even though he's consistently throwing six innings, his season-high pitch count is just 85. If he keeps getting early outs, and the Mariners keep stretching him out, Woo could start going even deeper into his starts. If that happens, his fantasy value would almost certainly increase from what is already is.
Woo may not be available in your Yahoo leagues, but there's basically a 50/50 shot that you can pick him up over on ESPN. His first start against Cleveland isn't a match made in heaven by any means, but his second start against Miami definitely is.
Jordan Hicks, San Francisco Giants
Yahoo: 65%; ESPN 46%
Not only has Hicks been excellent for the Giants this year, but he's got two solid matchups this week. His first start is on the road against the Cubs, who've been one of the worst offenses in baseball over the last month. Then he toes the slab in St. Louis, another struggling lineup.
Hicks' underlying numbers aren't as impressive as Woo's, but he's still a promising option. His 3.01 ERA, 1.2o WHIP, and 64:24 K/BB ratio speak for themselves. He's also more likely than Woo to be available in your leagues. If he is, definitely consider picking him up.
Points League Waiver Wire - Next Choices
Reese Olson, Miami Marlins
Yahoo: 30%; ESPN 11%
Olson is having a stellar sophomore season, highlighted by his 3.68 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 61:23 K/BB ratio. He's been struggling in June, though. He has a 10.43 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, and 14:4 K/BB ratio. Fortunately, his second start of the week will be in Chicago against the White Sox, perhaps the least-productive offense in MLB. His first matchup is against the Braves, who haven't been as potent offensively over the last month, but they're obviously not a lineup many pitchers look forward to facing.
Overall, Olson is capable of turning things around next week. And, all things considered, the upside of facing the White Sox almost certainly outweighs the potential woes that come with facing the Braves.
Aaron Civale, Tampa Bay Rays
Yahoo: 35%; ESPN 14%
So far this season, Civale hasn't had a year to remember on the mound. Through 14 starts, he has a 5.2o ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 74:20 K/BB ratio. But there are a few things I like about his matchups next week. First, he faces the Twins on the road. While the offense has been solid, their current lineup has a combined .626 OPS over 82 at-bats against Civale. He also has a 3.69 ERA in 31 2/3 innings over six career starts at Target Field. The odds of a good start against them are certainly in his favor.
His second start will be in Pittsburgh, and the Pirates rank 23rd in team OPS (.667) at PNC Park this year. Overall, Civale may not carry your team next week, but he is certainly poised to contribute positively.
Points League Waiver Wire - Deeper Choices
Braxton Garrett, Miami Marlins
Yahoo: 20%; ESPN 9%
Since he came off the IL, Garrett's outings have been all over the place. On one hand, he threw a shutout against the Diamondbacks on May 24. On the other, he's given up nine runs over his last 7 1/3 innings. What makes him an enticing option to stream this week is his matchups. Both of his starts will be in Miami against teams with below-average offenses. The Cardinals have a .663 OPS on the road (23rd overall), and the Mariners' is .679 (17th). If Garrett can do what he does best -- keep the ball on the ground -- he'll have two product outings next week.
