When is Max Meyer getting called up? Will Max Mayer play in June of this MLB season? Read about Max Meyer’s expected return and fantasy baseball prospect updates for 2024.
Second-ranked Marlins prospect Max Meyer began this season in the majors, making three starts before being sent back to the minors in an effort to manage his workload after sitting out all of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
But he was sent down on April 15 and has made nine starts since then. Now that it has been a couple months since we last saw him in Miami, when will we see him again?
It is a long season, but with the Fish virtually out of the playoff race already, is there any incentive in getting Meyer back to the big league club? If so, what does he have to offer? Let's break it down.
Max Meyer Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
In the three starts Meyer made for the Marlins this season, he went 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and a solid 14:3 K:BB in 17 IP. When he was sent down, starts No. 2 and No.3 in the minors were rough, giving up a total of nine earned runs in seven innings. His last six have been a bit better, as he's allowed a total of 11 earned runs over 20 2/3 IP (4.79 ERA) and he's striking out batters at a good rate (11.76 K/9) over that stretch.
The Marlins are in dire need of pitching, so while they are attempting to manage his innings and likely don't have playoff aspirations at this point, it is also somewhat perplexing that they have yet to bring him back up. A week ago, Manager Skip Schumaker said Meyer would return soon, but that hasn't happened yet and Meyer even made another start in the minors as recently as June 14, so it seems the earliest we'll see him back in Miami would be Friday, June 21.
The Marlins are without Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Edward Cabrera, Sixto Sanchez, and they recently put breakout performer Ryan Weathers on the 15-Day IL. They are currently rolling with a four-man rotation that includes Roddery Munoz who has five MLB starts to his name.
Max Meyer Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
As the second-ranked Marlins prospect and a former seventh-overall draft pick, there is a pedigree there that creates some high expectations. Meyer has proven he's got the stuff to be at least a solid starter in the majors, and could be a frontline starter if the performance matches the talent level.

Regardless of exactly when he'll be recalled, the fact is he will be recalled (barring some unforeseen circumstances) and should be making starts for fantasy managers in the second half of the season when the stats will count the most. The righty is available in 70% of Yahoo leagues. If the Marlins decide to shut him down towards the end of the season then you could be abandoned come fantasy playoff time, but at least Meyer should help get you there. Some leagues offer NA spots, separate from IL spots, and if your league does then he's a no-brainer stash.
For managers willing to use a bench spot for the starter, he could be a difference-maker who should be arriving back in the big leagues sooner rather than later. He's worth a stash in most leagues in anticipation of his impending return.
