Ty Chandler 2024 Outlook: High-End Handcuff Option
Ty Chandler was a late-season waiver wire pickup in 2023 after Cam Akers (Achilles) suffered a season-ending injury and Alexander Mattison suffered from fumbling and inefficiency issues. Chandler rewarded fantasy managers who started him in Round 1 of the fantasy playoffs, as he posted a Week 15 stat line of 23 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown alongside three receptions for 25 yards. In weeks that he started, Chandler was a serviceable RB option. He enters 2024 as the clear-cut backup to Aaron Jones, who is entering his age 29 season after missing six games a season ago. Jones will be the starter in Minnesota, but Chandler will see action as the RB2 and is a great late-round pick given Jones' injury history. If you draft Jones, do not leave drafts without Chandler on your bench. Even without rostering Jones, Chandler is a solid zero-RB target given his high upside in the event of a Jones injury.

Ty Chandler Not Recommended Vs. Tennessee
Ty Chandler will not be a viable fantasy option this weekend when his team travels to Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans. The 26-year-old has seemingly fallen out of favor as the handcuff to own over the last few weeks, getting out-snapped and out-carried by backfield mate Cam Akers after being acquired from the Houston Texans. Chandler did tote the rock four times for 18 yards in last weekend's 12-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars but only rotated into the game when lead back Aaron Jones (ribs) tended to an injury. Still, that drive was split with Akers. The third-year back is RotoBaller's PPR RB75 in this week's rankings.

Ty Chandler Not A Viable Week 9 Play
Ty Chandler will square off against the Indianapolis Colts at home this Sunday in one of the better on-paper matchups of Week 9. While Minnesota projects to have its way with a non-existent Colts defense, Chandler still won't be a recommended option in the juicy matchup. The 26-year-old back is a distant second option out of the Vikings backfield behind veteran Aaron Jones and likely won't put together a valuable fantasy performance unless Jones misses time or Minnesota blows Indy out of the water. Neither of these outcomes is exactly projectable. As RotoBaller's RB52 in PPR formats in this week's ranks, Chandler presents as little more than a desperation play as the handcuff to own behind Jones.

Ty Chandler Could See Bigger Role
Ty Chandler has been quiet as the primary backup this season. In fact, Chandler has rushed for 30 yards or less in every game but one this season. Chandler only saw two carries during last week's loss to the Detroit Lions. However, Chandler could see a bigger role in Week 8 with lead back Aaron Jones (hamstring) on the injury report. It's a short week as the Vikings play the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. The absence of Jones would mean Chandler likely becomes the lead back with Cam Akers being his primary backup. Chandler saw 14 carries in Week 5 and only managed 30 yards on the ground. Fantasy managers in desperate need of running back help should stash Chandler, but he's not worth even considering starting unless Jones sits out.

Ty Chandler Could See Increased Workload On Sunday
Ty Chandler could have an increased role if No. 1 running back Aaron Jones (hamstring) cannot suit up. Jones is currently listed as questionable on the team's injury report and will likely be a game-time decision. If Jones is eventually ruled out, Chandler should be expected to be pushed to the top of the depth chart. When Jones left their previous game early, Chandler saw 14 attempts but tallied a mere 30 yards. Through the air, he caught two passes for nine yards. Facing a tough Detroit defense that has allowed the fourth-fewest PPR points to opposing running backs does lower Chandler's ceiling this weekend. However, if he is in the lead role, he is worth a look as a flex play simply for the potential volume.
