Shane van Gisbergen Making Non-Drafting Oval Debut at Charlotte
6 months agoShane van Gisbergen is making his first NASCAR Cup Series start on a non-drafting oval in this weekend's Coca-Cola 600, so it's difficult to predict his performance. His only previous race at Charlotte came in yesterday's BetMGM 300 Xfinity Series race, where he drove from 29th to 15th, but both of his teammates, A.J. Allmendinger and Josh Williams, earned top-10s, even though SVG outran Williams for most of the race. Because of his experience in Supercars endurance races like the Bathurst 1000, SVG probably won't be thrown off by the endurance aspects of the race as much as most Xfinity Series rookies, but it's also true that Kaulig Racing has significantly lacked speed in the Cup Series and SVG has not yet nearly mastered ovals as much as most Cup starters have. As far as results, expect this to be more of a learning experience for Shane than a serious shot to contend.
