ANALYSIS: John Brebbia collected two saves back in 2018, but since then those have been the only two saves he's earned in his entire career. That is until his name was called Saturday to lock down the win for the White Sox in a 3-1 game against the Guardians. The 33-year-old pitched a scoreless ninth, sitting down all three batters he faced, including one via strikeout, preserving the victory. He's also tallied four Holds on the season, but the 4.38 ERA is not what you're looking for in a potential closer. Neither is the 18.8% HR/FB%.
But what he does have going for him are the 16 strikeouts compared to just two walks over 12 1/3 IP and a low 1.05 WHIP. The righty's 26.9% K-BB% is the highest of his career, as is his 15.2% SwStr%. So if the White Sox were to use him more, there's a chance he'd be successful. The team's current closer, Michael Kopech, has tallied four saves on the season, but has also blown one and taken the loss three times. Kopech has a better ERA (3.66), but a higher WHIP (1.22) and some command issues that lead to a lower K-BB% (19.5%) despite strong punchout numbers (31.7% K%).
"I said, ‘Don’t you dare stop this game. Just keep it going.'” Neither rain, nor rain, nor even more rain (3 hour 3 minute delay with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th) could stop John Brebbia and the White Sox in Saturday's 6-5 victory: https://t.co/SJLYqP5tnG

One more thing in Brebbia's favor is that the Sox play a doubleheader on Tuesday. If Kopech's workload was the reason Brebbia got the save chance Saturday, then he presumably would be in line Tuesday if by chance Kopech pitches in the first game. If by chance the White Sox are tired of Kopech's command issues, then perhaps Brebbia is next in line for closer duties. Either way, Brebbia is worth a speculative add in deeper leagues for managers desperate for saves. The veteran is available in nearly all Yahoo leagues and likely could be added for the low, low price of nothing (or next to nothing).
