Shane Baz is a fantasy baseball waiver wire stash for Week 8 (2024). Target Shane Baz as a top prospect free-agent waiver wire pickup for fantasy baseball.
BALLER MOVE: Stash in Standard Leagues
CALL-UP ETA: May
ANALYSIS: Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz (elbow/oblique) is nearing the end of his long recovery process and could return to the major leagues by the end of this month.
Shane Baz underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and was on track to be in full health to open the 2024 season. However, he had a minor setback with an oblique injury during spring training, which delayed his return to the mound.
The 24-year-old tossed 27 innings in 2022 with a stellar 30:9 K:BB ratio but allowed a 5.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.
The year prior, he pitched 13 ⅓ innings, posting a 2.03 ERA and 0.68 WHIP with an 18:3 K:BB ratio.
In case anyone forgot how damn good Shane Baz is, here is 2021 in the minors compared to a current Top-5 dynasty SP for me (Grayson Rodriguez).
G-Rod: 103 IP, 2.36 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 33.7% K-BB
Baz: 78.2 IP, 2.06 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 33.6% K-BB#FantasyBaseball #RaysUp pic.twitter.com/xp3NoqLl7a— Eric Cross (@EricCross04) December 29, 2023
When Baz has been on the mound he has flashed elite strikeout potential. However, he has been unable to stay healthy, which has greatly lowered his fantasy value.
He is on track to return to the major league roster later this month and has already made two rehab appearances.
With his elite strikeout upside, he is worth taking a flier on in all leagues. He could develop into a top starting pitcher by the end of the summer.
