Jonny DeLuca is a top fantasy baseball waiver wire pickup for Week 8 (2024). Fantasy baseball managers should add DeLuca as a waiver wire free agent in deep leagues.

ANALYSIS: Jonny DeLuca fractured his right hand when he was hit by a pitch in spring training and missed the first month of the season, but in early May he was reinstated after a rehab stint at Triple-A Durham where he went 6-for-20 (.300) with two home runs and a 4:1 BB:K.

The 25-year-old stepped right into the Tampa lineup and began to hit, going 7-for-18 (.389) over his first five games, including a double, a triple, a home run, and two stolen bases. The right-handed hitter has since cooled off, going 0-for-8 over the last three games, even getting lifted in favor of a left-hand hitting batter (Richie Palacios) on Saturday when the Yankees brought in a right-handed pitcher (Dennis Santana).
The short side of a platoon situation is not what fantasy managers want to see, so keep an eye on this new development. DeLuca's bat does have some pop in it, hitting 19 home runs between Double-A, Triple-A, and the majors over 97 games in 2023. Plus, he does have some speed with 13 stolen bases in that same time period. If DeLuca can manage to continue to get regular at-bats he'd be a viable fantasy asset, and he's available in almost 80% of Yahoo leagues.
