The New York Giants backfield underwent significant changes in the offseason. Saquon Barkley was the featured back in New York since getting drafted as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, the superstar signed a massive three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, leaving the Giants without a critical part of their offense.

Devin Singletary signed a three-year deal with New York after spending the 2023 season with the Houston Texans. The veteran running back has history with head coach Brian Daboll. Both spent time with the Buffalo Bills over the past few years.

New York signed Singletary to a three-year deal worth $16.5 million in free agency. Last season, he had 216 rushing attempts for 898 yards and four touchdowns despite playing on a pass-first offense. Singletary set career highs in rushing attempts and yards in 2023.

The veteran has never been a star running back. Yet, he is a serviceable starter. Singletary has had at least 775 rushing yards in four of his five years in the NFL, including 819 or more in three consecutive seasons. Meanwhile, Gray barely saw the field as a 2023 fifth-round rookie, totaling 17 rushing attempts for 48 yards and zero touchdowns. He averaged only 3.7 yards per rushing attempt.

Singletary is the heavy favorite to be the RB1 in New York, as Gray is no threat to his starting role. However, could Tyrone Tracy Jr. take away the starting role from the veteran?

The 2024 fifth-round rookie has drawn comparisons to David Johnson because of his impact in the passing game and on the ground. Tracy was a wide receiver at Iowa before transitioning to running back at Purdue. Despite being new to the running back position, he averaged 6.3 yards per rushing attempt and had eight touchdowns last season.

While Singletary likely holds onto the RB1 role for the Giants in 2024, fantasy players should target Tracy in their dynasty rookie drafts. He has a chance to have a role as a rookie and is the best bet to replace the veteran as the starting running back in New York.
