Justin Lawrence Headed For Paternity List
12 months agoThe Colorado Rockies are expected to place right-handed reliever Justin Lawrence on the paternity list and to summon right-hander Angel Chivilli from Double-A Hartford for their upcoming series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. Lawrence is technically the Rockies' closer with two saves on the year, but he's also sporting an ugly 7.20 ERA (2.94 FIP) and 1.80 WHIP with five walks and 10 strikeouts in his 10 innings in 11 appearances out of the 'pen for the lowly Rockies. The 29-year-old is only worth rostering for fantasy managers that are desperate for saves, but Lawrence isn't going to see a ton of chances if the Rockies continue playing like they have been. If a save situation arises this weekend in Pittsburgh with Lawrence away, it will likely go to Jake Bird.

Justin Lawrence Placed On Waivers
2 months agoColorado Rockies right-handed pitcher Justin Lawrence was placed on waivers. After posting a 3.72 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP during the 2023 season, Lawrence took a step back in 2024 as he held a 6.49 ERA with a 11.78 WHIP. In 2023, Lawrence tallied 11 saves and tallied 78 punchouts across 75 frames. However, in 2024, Lawrence tallied just two saves with 45 strikeouts across 59 2/3 innings. Last summer, Lawrence generated a high 6.23 xERA and a .300 xBA which placed him in the first percentile in both metrics. He also generated whiffs at a low 22.6 percent rate and strikeouts at a 16.1 percent rate, which were both well below the average marks. Given his struggles last season, Lawrence will likely not draw extensive interest on waivers.

Justin Lawrence Activated From Injured List
10 months agoColorado Rockies relief pitcher Justin Lawrence (shoulder) has been activated from the 15-day injured list on Monday. The right-hander will return to the bullpen after missing three weeks of action due to a shoulder strain. The assumption is that he'll work his way back into the closer mix, but this is a situation to avoid right now. Lawrence holds a 5.91 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 21 1/3 innings of work. Possibly some time off has helped Lawrence get back on track.

Justin Lawrence Faces Hitters On Monday
10 months agoColorado Rockies relief pitcher Justin Lawrence (shoulder) faced live hitters during Monday's live batting practice session. Manager Bud Black said it "went well" and that Lawrence will join Triple-A Albuquerque to start a minor-league rehab assignment later this week. It sounds like everything went well and Lawrence is making progress from his shoulder injury that has kept him out since late May. The Rockies are hopeful that some rest will help the right-hander get back on track. Before going down, Lawrence held a 5.91 ERA, 1.83 WHIP in 21 1/3 innings of work. Currently, the Rockies are using a committee approach with Jalen Beeks, Tyler Kinley, and Nick Mears at the closer spot. This is a situation to avoid in terms of fantasy baseball.

Justin Lawrence Tweaking His Mechanics
11 months agoColorado Rockies manager Bud Black said that right-handed reliever Justin Lawrence (shoulder) will accompany the team on its road trip to St. Louis and Minnesota, starting on Thursday, and will begin throwing bullpen sessions during the road trip. While on the injured list with a right-shoulder strain, Lawrence has been tweaking his mechanics. Barring a setback, the 29-year-old reliever should be able to come off the IL to rejoin Colorado's bullpen by the middle of June. Lawrence opened the year as Colorado's primary closer but has struggled with a 5.91 ERA (4.12 FIP), a 1.83 WHIP, two saves, 15 walks and 20 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. It remains to be seen what role Lawrence will operate in when he returns to the majors, but right now, the Rockies have a messy closer committee going on involving Jalen Beeks, Tyler Kinley and Nick Mears. It's a situation to avoid.
