Corbin Carroll Buy or Sell? Fantasy Baseball Trade Targets and Avoids (Week 6)

BALLER MOVE: Sell Corbin Carroll

ANALYSIS: A popular top-five selection in drafts just a few months ago is off to a dreadful start to the season, and many fantasy managers are regretting their investment in the reigning NL Rookie of the Year.

So far, the 23-year-old has posted a .197/.299/.248 stat line with just one home run, compared to last season, when he showed superstar potential with a .285/.362/.506 line and 25 home runs. 

A lot has gone wrong for Carroll, but the biggest scare is a significant drop in power production. In June of last season, Carroll was battling soreness in the same shoulder he received surgery on in 2021, and since then, his power numbers have been much lower.

Prior to June, Carroll posted a .549 SLG with 18 home runs but only hit 7 long balls in the entire second half of the 2023 season. This has clearly affected him this season, as he has just one home run and four extra-base hits throughout the first month of this season.

Corbin Carroll is becoming really concerning.

In addition, he has an alarming 28.4% hard-hit rate and 84.6 mph exit velocity which place him in the bottom 10% of all hitters.

Not all is bad for Carroll, as he still remains an elite threat on the bases. This season, his 29.1 sprint speed places him in the top 93rd percentile among all qualified hitters and is reflected in his already strong tally of eight swiped bags.

Carroll is a difficult player to call a buy or sell simply because of the elite potential he showed not even a year ago. However, his underlying metrics are not positive at all, and his shoulder is clearly impacting his upside. 

While he remains a safe bet for a high total of stolen bases, I recommend moving off of Carroll if the price is right.
