12 months agoNew York Mets shortstop prospect Luisangel Acuna is showing off the speed at Triple-A, but not much power yet. The 22-year-old hit a home run in his first game of the season, however, has not hit one since. Ronald's brother went 2-for-5 with a single, a triple, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, bringing his season slashline to a pedestrian .211/.253/.310. Acuna has stolen seven bases so far this year and 40 or more each of the past three seasons. Francisco Lindor is blocking his way to the majors at shortstop though, but he could make it to Queens as a second baseman or outfielder. He's not forcing the issue with his performance at the plate, however.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

2 days agoNew York Mets infielder Luisangel Acuna has made the team's Opening Day roster, sources tell ElExtraBase's Daniel Alvarez-Montes. Acuna's chances of making the roster out of camp increased dramatically when Jeff McNeil went down with an oblique injury. The 23-year-old Venezuelan middle infielder, who is the younger brother of Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuna Jr., made his major-league debut last year and went 12-for-39 (.308) with three home runs and six RBI in just 14 regular-season games played. He hit .250 (13-fo-52) with a double, five RBI, three stolen bases and seven runs scored in 21 Grapefruit League games this spring. To begin the 2025 regular season, Acuna, who bats right-handed, figures to be on the short side of a platoon at second base with Brett Baty. When McNeil returns from his injury, Acuna could be ticketed for a trip back to the minors.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoIt sounds like New York Mets infielders Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna will both make the Opening Day roster out of camp and platoon at second base until Jeff McNeil (oblique) is able to return. Given his experience and the fact that he hits from the left side, Baty figures to open the year on the strong side of a platoon at the keystone in Queens with Acuna. The 25-year-old has deserved playing time to open the season, as he's currently hitting .343 (12-for-35) with two home runs and three doubles in Grapefruit League action. The former 12th overall pick in 2019 has yet to find much success at the big-league level in three seasons, though, hitting .215/.282/.325 with 15 homers and 55 RBI in 169 games. Acuna, 23, has hit just .226 in spring training, although he did go 12-for-39 (.308) with three homers and six RBI in his first 14 big-league games in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoNew York Mets infield prospect Luisangel Acuna (arm) exited Saturday's contest after being hit by a pitch on his left arm. He was hit by Tampa Bay Rays left-handed pitcher Shane McClanahan in the second frame. The young infielder was able to swipe second base before being pulled from the contest. Fantasy managers should monitor his status as the team could have removed him out of precaution. Earlier in the week, infielder Nick Madrigal (shoulder) underwent surgery to repair his fractured shoulder which will keep him sidelined for the entire season. Acuna is expected to have a more significant role in camp with Madrigal's injury, but Acuna now may have to remain sidelined for a period of time. Last season, Acuna made his MLB debut and posted a strong .308/.325/.641 line across 14 games. When healthy, he will compete for starts at the keystone alongside Jeff McNeil.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoNew York Mets infield prospect Luisangel Acuna is expected to have a more significant role with second baseman Nick Madrigal (shoulder) sidelined. Madrigal suffered a dislocated shoulder during Sunday's spring training contest and could miss the start of the regular season. This now opens the door for Acuna to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster and a consistent role in the starting lineup. Acuna made his MLB debut late in the 2024 season and held his own across a 14-game stint. He posted a .308/.325/.641 line with two doubles, three home runs, and one stolen base. He was also placed on the postseason roster. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor Acuna's development as he will likely slot in as the backup option behind Jeff McNeil at the keystone and Francisco Lindor at shortstop. However, if he continues to perform well, he may earn the starting job at second base.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
