12 months agoToronto Maple Leafs defenseman Joel Edmundson (undisclosed) will return to the lineup for Thursday's contest against the visiting New Jersey Devils. The veteran blue-liner has missed the past eight games after getting injured on a blocked shot in a 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on March 24. "It was definitely frustrating but we have so many solid defensemen that can jump in and they've been playing solid so definitely makes it a little easier, but it's never fun watching hockey," Edmundson said. He added if it were the playoffs, he would have played through the injury, but both he and the team decided to proceed with caution. Acquired in a trade from the Capitals on March 7, Edmunson has 14 hits, 11 blocks, and two penalty minutes in seven games since joining the Leafs.--Brenton Kemp

6 months agoLos Angeles Kings defenseman Joel Edmundson (personal) has been added to the non-roster list ahead of Wednesday's clash with the Maple Leafs. He will miss the contest for personal reasons. According to Kings head coach Jim Hiller, Edmundson has left the team to go back home. Edmundson, who signed a four-year, $15.4 million contract with the Kings as a free agent in the summer, has averaged a career-high 21:09 of ice time early in the year on a blue line that has been without Drew Doughty (ankle). He has tallied one assist with four shots, eight hits, and three blocks in three games. Andreas Englund is projected to come into the lineup as Edmundson's replacement on Wednesday. The Swedish blue-liner is generally a non-factor in fantasy hockey and should remain on the waiver wire.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

10 months agoThe Toronto Maple Leafs and defenseman Joel Edmundson reportedly have mutual interest in a reunion, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. The Leafs acquired the veteran blueliner in a trade with the Washington Capitals ahead of the March 8 NHL trade deadline. Edmundson appeared in nine games with the team, failing to hit the scoresheet but he collected 21 hits, 16 blocked shots, and a plus-three rating in 17:48 of average ice time per game. He also appeared in all of the team's seven postseason contests, notching an assist with 22 hits and 12 blocks in 18:40 of average ice time per game. Edmundson saw his four-year, $14 million deal, originally signed by the Montreal Canadiens, expire at the end of the 2023-24 season.--Brenton Kemp

1 year agoThe Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals. In exchange, the Capitals receive a 2024 third-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Washington retained 50% of Edmundson's cap hit as part of the swap while the Montreal Canadiens are also retaining money on Edmundson's contract due to a trade with the Capitals last season. The rugged veteran stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 221 pounds and offers plenty of physicality. Edmundson has appeared in 44 games this season, recording one goal and six points but also has 59 hits and 49 blocked shots in that time. He recorded 112 hits and 149 blocks along with 58 penalty minutes in just 61 games with the Canadiens a season ago. William Lagesson is expected to be placed on non-roster waivers in order to clear a roster spot for Edmundson.--Brenton Kemp

1 year agoWashington Capitals defenseman Joel Edmundson (upper body) will return from a one-game absence Saturday versus St. Louis. The towering blue-liner was a game-time decision against the Blues on Thursday and couldn't go, but he won't have to skip another meeting with his former team. Edmundson started his NHL career with the Blues in 2015, winning the Stanley Cup four years later. He's in the midst of his first year in D.C., following a stint with the Canadiens. Edmundson is a big defensive presence, but he does very little offensively. In 27 outings this season, Edmundson has contributed only one goal and two assists. Forward Beck Malenstyn (personal) will also return for Washington on Saturday.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
