Geraldo Perdomo Undergoes Surgery
12 months agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) had surgery on Monday to fix a torn meniscus in his right knee after being placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday. Manager Torey Lovullo said the surgery went well. Perdomo is "bummed" and hopes to be back next month. The D-backs brought up infielder Kevin Newman from Triple-A Reno, but Blaze Alexander is expected to see most of the playing time at the 6 in Perdomo's absence, with Jace Peterson also an option at the position. In six games at Reno, Newman hit .364/.407/.636 with a home run and seven RBI. The 24-year-old Perdomo injured his knee on April 3 while rounding the bases in extra innings and is expected to miss at least a month of action.

Joc Pederson, Geraldo Perdomo Out Versus Southpaw
9 months agoArizona Diamondbacks outfielder/designated hitter Joc Pederson and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo are not in the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the hosting Kansas City Royals with left-hander Cole Ragans toeing the rubber. Randal Grichuk is serving as the DH for Arizona and will hit fifth, while Kevin Newman is at the 6 and batting eighth versus Ragans. Pederson has only 21 plate appearances against lefties in 2024 and is hitting .177 (3-for-17) against them with one of his 13 homers on the year, so it's no surprise he's on the bench to kick off the week. Grichuk and Newman have both faced Ragans just once in their career and have come away hitless. Grichuk hasn't displayed much power in 155 at-bats in Arizona in 2024, but he's hitting an impressive .284, including a .300/.363/.420 slash line against southpaws with a homer and 17 RBI in 100 at-bats.

Geraldo Perdomo To Return From Injured List Tuesday
10 months agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) will return from the 10-day injured list to rejoin the team on Tuesday for the start of their series against the Los Angeles Angels. Perdomo has been out since early April after requiring surgery to fix the meniscus in his right knee, but the 24-year-old is now ready to rejoin the Snakes and will eventually settle back in as the club's everyday shortstop, which is bad news for both veteran Kevin Newman and rookie Blaze Alexander, who have been filling in at the 6 since Perdomo went down. Perdomo isn't a high-end fantasy option at the shortstop position by any means, but he did make the All-Star squad in 2023 for the first time in his career, when the switch-hitting Dominican slashed .246/.353/.359 with six homers, 47 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 144 regular-season games.

Geraldo Perdomo Plays Shortstop On Rehab Assignment
10 months agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) played seven innings at shortstop with Triple-A Reno on Wednesday on his minor-league rehab assignment and went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Perdomo began his rehab assignment over the weekend in the Arizona Complex League, but now he's facing top-level minor-league competition and is getting closer to a return after injuring his knee in early April. Manager Torey Lovullo already ruled out the 24-year-old from returning this weekend in San Diego for a series against the Padres, but there's a chance he could be reinstated from the injured list next week. Perdomo could be eased in initially, but he should eventually take over starting shortstop duties in Arizona despite veteran Kevin Newman playing well there of late for the D-backs.

Geraldo Perdomo Starting Rehab Assignment On Wednesday
10 months agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) will start his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. This was the original plan after Perdomo started taking at-bats in the Arizona Complex League over the weekend. Perdomo will now face stiffer competition at Reno and could be cleared to return from the 10-day injured list later this week if he doesn't suffer any setbacks with his knee. The Snakes have used a combination of rookie Blaze Alexander and more recently veteran Kevin Newman at shortstop since losing Perdomo to a knee injury early in April. The 24-year-old Perdomo will return to starting duties at the 6 in the desert when he's fully healthy after being named to his first career All-Star team in 2023 with a .246/.353/.359 slash line, six homers, 47 RBI and 16 steals in 144 games.
