It was a surprise to most when the Dallas Cowboys cut running back Ezekiel Elliott before the 2023 season. Elliott -- who had 8,262 career rush yards in Dallas -- was a key part of that offense for seven years. For cap purposes, though, it made sense as the team saved $10.9 million.
Soon after his release, Elliott found a new home with the New England Patriots. He signed a one-year, $3 million deal to back up starter Rhamondre Stevenson.
With his one-year deal up, is Elliott still a free agent? Where will he sign? Let's dive in and find out.

Is Ezekiel Elliott a Free Agent?
The 2024 running back free-agent class was one of the deepest it has been in recent years. With Derrick Henry, Aaron Jones, Saquon Barkley, Tony Pollard, Austin Ekeler, and Josh Jacobs all set to hit the open market this spring, the lower-tiered running backs like Elliott might not have seen a ton of love from teams right off the bat.
That could explain why Elliott remains a free agent at the beginning of April. However, he is currently one of the top free-agent running backs still available. So, if a team is in the market for a back, they could turn to the 28-year-old veteran -- who is fresh off a 642-yard rushing season.

Elliott struggled to get much going on the ground to start the year, but once Stevenson went down with an injury, he was more involved on offense. He scored a touchdown in three of the final five games of the season. The veteran will look to carry that momentum with a new team in 2024.
Which Teams Would be the Best Fit for Ezekiel Elliott?
Despite free agency being open for three weeks now, there are still plenty of teams that could use a back like Elliott. The top team that comes to mind is the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys lost Tony Pollard in free agency and didn't make any moves for a running back this offseason. That's where Elliott comes in. He could once again be the team's top back and that bruiser up the middle for them. The two sides are also open to a reunion, according to reports.

It seems that the likeliest landing spot for Elliott could be Dallas, but don't rule out teams like the Bills, Jets, Chargers, Chiefs, or Buccaneers -- all of whom could use another running back on offense. Wherever the veteran winds up, he will get his fair share of touches in 2024.
