The NFL Draft was held in downtown New York City from 1965-2014, with Radio City Music Hall often being the site of the draft, but the NFL wanted to expand the location of the draft year to year to make it a more fan-centered experience.
Since then, we've seen the draft held in Chicago, Philadelphia, Arlington (TX), Nashville, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Detroit (for 2024), and the 2025 NFL Draft will be held in Green Bay.
What Are the Rules of Each Pick and How is the Order Determined?
The NFL loves to operate on the principle of parity, meaning they love new teams making the playoffs every year. The NFL Draft order operates in reverse of how the previous NFL season played out. What that means is the team with the worst record from the year before is awarded the No. 1 overall pick in the following year's draft. There are 32 picks in each round (one for every team), and this is how the draft order is determined:
- Non-playoff teams: Picks 1-18
- Eliminated in wild card round: Picks 19-24
- Eliminted in divisional round: Picks 25-28
- Conference runners-up: Picks 29-30
- Super Bowl runner-up: Pick 31
- Super Bowl winner: Pick 32
Once the NFL Draft starts, one team is always "on the clock." Several years ago, there used to be fifteen minute pick timers for Round 1 and the event dragged on too long for fans, so the league cut down the times to make the event for more fan-friendly.
Here are the timers for each pick in every round:
- Round 1: ten minutes per selection
- Round 2: seven minutes per selection
- Rounds 3-6: five minutes per selection
- Round 7: four minutes per selection
The NFL Draft will be here before we all know it, and hopefully this article serves as a solid primer to have you ready for all of the action!
