Kyle Finnegan is a fantasy baseball waiver wire pickup for closers and saves. Target Finnegan as a free-agent relief pitcher for saves on the waiver wire.

ANALYSIS: Kyle Finnegan recorded his second save of the season on Wednesday for the Nationals. If not for an error on the defense, it could have been a 1-2-3 inning for the 32-year-old. The righty pitched the ninth and struck out the first batter he saw, then a runner reached on an error, but then Finnegan got the next two batters out, which included his second strikeout of the appearance.

It was a much-needed effort from the veteran, as it seemed like he and potential closer-in-waiting Hunter Harvey were swapping poor outings for a couple of games, but it has been Finnegan with all of the ninth inning work in the early going. Harvey had a nice outing Wednesday, too, striking out four batters in an inning and two-thirds, but the ninth inning still appears to be Finnegan's job.
Yahoo rostership indicates that either Harvey is the more effective pitcher or the future closer, or perhaps a combination of both, as Harvey's rostership is 67% while Finnegan's is 59%. But for now, it's Finnegan with two saves to Harvey's zero. So, for managers in need of saves, Finnegan is the arm to own in this bullpen until further notice.
It's always a dicey proposition owning shaky closers on bad teams. Still, at least it doesn't appear to be a dreaded "closer by committee" situation. Finnegan has proven he can do it, collecting 28 saves last season with a 3.76 ERA (3.99 SIERA). Despite some volatility, Finnegan probably shouldn't be floating around on waiver wires in 12-team leagues.
