One and Done Selections - The PLAYERS Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque, and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Hideki Matsuyama
Alternate -
I’m not surprising anyone by mentioning how volatile this PLAYERS Championship environment can be. Even players with good course history have usually been bitten by this Pete Dye layout at one point or another.
As a result, you want to target an elite golfer, but maybe not a “use-in-a-major” elite golfer, because, yanno, crazy things can happen at THE PLAYERS. Enter Hideki Matsuyama, a player with a rock-solid Sawgrass resume and trending form. His lightning bolt win at the Genesis Invitational might have kickstarted something in the Japanese superstar, as he followed up with another strong outing at Bay Hill last week.

Spencer Aguiar - Max Homa
Alternate - Sam Burns
Max Homa has produced back-to-back top-16 finishes on tour, with two top-13 results here over the past two seasons. My model saw him rank first when combining the two categories I just discussed of short-iron proximity and weighted scrambling. That is a metric that saw Scheffler rank number one last year before winning. The same came into play for Thomas in 2021. It will take more than just that combination that to win the title, but it enters him into an elite production territory when trying to mimic the results from past leaderboards.
I went marginally in favor of the market when deciding between Homa and Burns because of how close I had the two. It also didn't help factors that Burns was one of the bigger overachievers at TPC Sawgrass historically, despite his recent 35th and 26th at the track.
Yearly Earnings - $5,155,049
Yearly Cuts Made - 9/9
Matt Miller - Justin Thomas
This week I am taking Justin Thomas. Despite a shaky performance at the Genesis a few weeks ago, JT is putting together quite the start to 2024. He has four top-12 finishes in his first five starts after a forgettable 2023.
Yearly Earnings - $2,114,923
Yearly Cuts Made - 8/9
Byron Lindeque - Max Homa
We are done trying to get cute in this contest. I am bringing in my big dog who is an absolute savage when in a dog fight down the final few holes of a tournament. The west coast swing is over and we kept him holstered through his favorite stretch of golf as his game didn’t quite seem to be clicking. He typically hasn’t thrived in majors and since this is the biggest purse on the schedule, hitting this tournament on the head is crucial to success as it allows you to potentially play a little safer going forward.
Max Homa has been off to a relatively slow start to the season, finally notching his first top-10 in his sixth start at the API last week (T8). His putter lost him strokes in three of his first four events, but in his last seven rounds of golf he has not lost strokes putting, gaining a total of 10 strokes with the flat stick. For some, that may not be sustainable, but for Max, that's a level of putting that occurred quite regularly when he was rolling it well a few months ago.
His iron play seems to have found some momentum heading into the week and when you notice that he has averaged +1.25 per round on approach at TPC Sawgrass on his last 10 rounds here. After a T6 and T13 in ‘23 and ‘22 respectively, we could see his putter and his ball striking combust into a golden, miniature silhouette of a man that many of the game’s greats have posed with after surviving hole 17 and ending the week as the PLAYERS Champion.
